FE's! Why are they illegal?

Heh, tru about fixating on the next bike, he was standing directly behind mine, like yours, unbaffled TB's... I've never been so ginger with the throttle lol

A letter of some description is a good idea. Someone has to write it though... I'm a software developer, no idea about legal stuff. Perhaps the new SA Attorny General would be interested, does he ride a motorcycle?

No i don't think there is anyone from the Government in SA, that gives a rats ar$e about Bike Riders!

They just see us as another source of revenue!

What really needs to be done, is the actual mechanics of the law need to be challenged, the so-called technical reason for a fender being compulsory, needs to be "de-bunked", which would probably be best coming from someone with a tertiary qualification, that relates to the technical aspects of the law...engineer's report????

Or a 6 year old kid. "This six year old kid can see that this hunk of useless plastic will only deflect a rock if the bike is going backwards. I vote we put her in charge of the Police.....can't do any worse".

Sound about right?...lol.

I don't know if I can help with the letter, but if you guys don't have any luck with the publishing of it, I have insiders in AMCN, 2 Wheels, Cycle Torque, Road Rider, Super Streetbike, Rapid and plenty more :)

Let me know if I can help. I'm also confused as to why the law is so strict. And I always laugh when I see a Ninja 250 that has the stock placemat-sized rear fender on it - hilarious. And isn't it ironic that the Street Triple for example has a sectioned fender that makes it simple to diy the elimination......!

Well theres are probably a few points that can be argued.
First plate visibility, just because they are visible from a normal perspective doesn't mean the same is true from a camera perspective.
Secondly, while the fling it reduces on the rider may be negligable, its certainly possible that it can stop some from going into vehicles behind.
Then as already mentioned, indicators. We have all seen the cowboys with a deathwish with stupid indicators. Alot of factor cars even come with them these days, built in ways that make vision from any angle except the front/back impossible.

The law is a joke because in Australia we have a system that basically works one way:
If the police want to get you for something they can, it doesn't matter if your the most law abiding citizen in the entire WORLD, they can pin something on you, and if you argue thats another thing.
Whether its bikes, being in public, or whatever. They are basically there as another way of the government screwing you over.
Has anyone here ever been helped by the police?

People wonder why so many people really hold a grudge against the police and its because in my experience most people are law abiding and they get some ****ty officer who, because his job sucks is in a bad mood and who then proceeds to wreck their day, week, month, year or life because he is feeling vindictive.
I've met one really happy friendly police officer ONCE, I have met a few polite police officers, and I have met or seen alot more angry and rude police officers, spoiling for a fight.

Honestly when you can become a cop and get a gun in 6 months something is always going to be wrong.
It should be a 3-4 year degree including uni or tafe, with actual emphasis on the LAWS not how to abuse them.
This and they need to get rid of all the useless corrupt 'friends of people in high places' officers in charge of the police now. The police shouldn't be a political weapon.

Cheers.....I suppose, if we get our act together, and get some stuff happening, any helping hand would be appreciated...

More than anything, it would be nice to raise the issue's profile...i know that it annoys a lot of people...

I know it annoyed me a lot, when i was booked, for something that i see as a technicality, or very minor issue at best, on a bike which was/is always in the best possible state of roadworthiness IMHO.

Hmmmm....

Like all people, there are good cops and bad cops.

If you're in an accident, you get assaulted or your house gets broken into, who's the first person you call? The cops.

No matter what your opinion is of them or whether you've had a bad experience with the police, when you need them they are there.

My house was broken into years ago - they were around straight away, took fingerprints etc.

When I got punched in the head by a "road rager" cyclist @ 15 years ago, their treatment of me was second to none. They followed up with phone calls checking on how I was and also giving me progress in the case.

They ain't all bad.

ohh god not this topic..

they are ileagal as it the FE is an ADR ( aus desgin rule )
it HAS to be there for the bike to be sold in aus

it is not a law u are trying to change but an ADR not an easy thing

yes it is a STUPID ADR
hell i have a FE :)

Yep, this topic! I know it's a pain in the A, and yep, i am sure it would be hard to change.....

Yep, it's an ADR that is enforced by the police...

Yep, it's a Stupid ADR!

As for trying to change an ADR....i wonder what the actual process re changing such?

Which Government departments are involved?, what is the process?

I aint here to bash cops, but i will admit that i was not impressed with the officer that booked my bikes attitude....and in any job where you are working for & paid by the public, that public shoud at least be treated with respect.

This is not about the attitude of police, this thread is about a silly rule, which is enforced by the police....

Ahh now see I hear this alot, especially from people who have never NEEDED the police (obviously you have, and have good experiences)

I was in a accident (not at fault), police didn't bother turning up, and it ended up an insurance ****fight, was a public bus running into the back of me and trying to claim i was at fault.
Got all the drivers details except address, so they claimed I didn't have enough details to put it through to their insurance, police said they couldn't help (after not turning up) and it was a nightmare, all because according to the police I had enough details for an insurance claim so they couldn't go through the channels to get his details for me! Finally after being told I was at fault by the insurance company I rang them abused the **** out of them about it being a simple accident where I was run into the back of, and after showing some extreme rage the bus companies insurance covered it as they should have from the start.
This was excuseable, however....
We where robbed (the house), called the police they took 3 hours to turn up. This is after we arrived home to find our house open, with theives possibly still inside. They did jack **** except say "Oh this is happening alot around here at the moment".
We have had people brawling outside our house, smashing car windows and mirrors, the police don't bother coming... ever (it happens all the time). The station is literally maybe 1km away.

Was also at a pub once that got attacked by carnies, they smashed a friends motorcycle, bashed a brawler (he was hospitalised with serious injuries) hurt alot of the patrons, and then spent 15 mins throwing metal bars and glass at the pub once it was barricaded with everyone inside.
The police turned up later, caught no one, and pretty much missed the whole event...... luckily the ambulance service was good (from memory they got there before the police too)

I got pulled over for a breathtest once on the bike, and the officer was fine, she was polite friendly and it was good. If every police officer was like this I would never have an issue.

The problem is often the police don't turn up when needed (if you really need them you basically need to lie and tell them someone has a weapon, as its the only way they'll come), which according to recent newspaper articles is because they are forced to spend so much time behind the desk.
Then add in the fact alot of police seem to have a chip on their shoulder, and are following stupid political agenda's which generally include harrassing people and making money (neither of which they should be doing, and is probably the reason for the chip on their shoulders) and you have a bad situation thanks to the pollies.
Also, personally I don't think the police should have guns or tazers, at worst there should be rapid response units specifically armed. Otherwise batons like in the UK. Why? First because no yahoo's will join to get to use a gun, and secondly because deadly weapons have no place on police officers. Especially when the police course is 6 months training....
You need a several year course to teach children (a much less responsible job imo) and yet you can become a police officer, uphold the law, and a gun, and its 6 months?

Obviously there are good and bad officers, but I think the whole system they are trying to uphold is too political and too corrupt, and they don't attract the right kind of people.

With all due respect Kris, this thread is about the rule on fender eliminators.

Although Police attitude's towards policing it are a little bit hard to take.....turning up at carparks fuill of bikes, and booking people en masse.

The bigger issue is FE's, not police in general...

I would like to get as much positive feedback regarding this issue, so as to build a plot for at least writing a letter....an intelligent, well reasoned, and written in such a matter, that it represents the issue, not the emotion surruonding this issue.

A simple answer would be for all of us to get rid of their FE's...then we would not get booked....

But, and this is the "but" that has driven this whole thread....Why? What is the point with massive, long rear fender's? What is the difference re saftey, with, or without a rear fender?

Yes you can still run the mandatory reflector with an FE, but not on your number plate, as it it illegal to alter the number plate issued, in anyway...have been told before to remove reflectors from number plate...

Yes, you can still have your indicators the mandatory 30cm apart with an FE.

The silly thing is, most OEM rear fenders these days, are just sticks with a reflector on the end of them, and are constructed not to stop water, gravel, and rocks from showering road users behind you, but rather constructed to meet the letter of the rule, with as little a rear fender as possible...

This makes the rule a joke as it is....cause even when you observing the law by having an FE in place, it is doing nothing different to a bike without a rear fender!

Absolutely right Wolfman. They are the ugliest thing out there. Big lumps of black plastic - do you think this would happen on a car - a big hunk of black plastic on the front and back for the rego plate? Doubt it.

We have to at least TRY to do something about it. It will probably fall on deaf ears, but hey, we gotta try

We definately gotta try , Rumpole has been notified  Even if he can help us with wording its a fantastic start...

Believe it or not...i am actually a copywriter, and write lots of Radio & press ad's, as well as editorial for media release...

(you would never know this, the way most of my posts are mispelt, with awful grammar!)

But this is different, it's not about selling something, it's about making sense of a rule, and de-bunking it...then presenting it in an ordered, and common sense document....

Would be great if we could find some studies or reports on same, or similar issue...

I'm already googling....

Let's find as many studies, legal precidents etc and post them on here.

I'm not a copy writer - excuse my poor spelling guys :D
