Well once again we got pounded by snow!

Well in one of those freak things that winter does - we got nothing to speak off up on the north side of Boston in MA today. Too bad for you guys - I'm just waiting for a little warmer temps (like where it wouldn't be below freezing on both the way to and from work) so I can sneak in a little riding - fingers crossed...

Help me out here,- coz I just don't get it:

In the reports we get from the US these days they tell us that:

50cm of snow have fallen in the north east, worst around D.C.
200000 people are, as a result hereof, without power.
People owning 4wd, are requested to assist doctors and nurses so that they can get to work.

The reason for my confusion lies in the fact that:

Here in Denmark we have not had decent snow (10 cm+) in 14 years, but this year we have had 60cm+ for the last month+.
The only thing this does, is that people sometimes shows up 5 or 10 minutes late for work in the morning.
If an ambulance or a doc gets stuck, they send out an army belt driven personnel carrier to assist.

The questions this gives me is i.e.:

Don't the national guard have belt driven personnel carrier they could use to assist in?
Does nobody consider it vital to ensure the power grid against a bit of snow?
Where does all the tax money go in the US,- apparently they don't go towards securing the infrastructure ......
Is a snow machine considered a terrorist tool these days in the US?

You have to keep in mind that DC is not exactly "northeast" in terms of latitude. This is a storm that has had no equal in that area for the last 90 years. Since the weather in and around DC (and all the way north to NYC) is so mild snowplows and snow moving equipment, 4WD vehicles, snowblowers, etc. are non-existent for all intents and purposes. Therein lies the problem.
The immobility will be brief as it's just as likely to get to 45 deg. F and rain within a day or two. Snow gone!
The same problem plagues the power grid. Building grid lines north of NYC we take in to account the possibility of wet, heavy snow. Trees are cleared back and lines are beefed up. In the mid-atlantic states the snow is not necessarily a chronic problem and so a freak storm like this takes down lines and poles.
Get 300 miles north of NYC and we live with snow and big storms all through the winter months (although we never saw a flake from this one). The roads are almost never closed, we do have generators for the occasional power outage, we shovel and plow, and we don't line up for milk, bread, and batteries. In fact we venture out to dinner to see our friends and neighbors to discuss the weather and how the roas will be a bitch on the way to work in the AM.
I guess it's all about what one is used to, eh? I'm off to snowshoe up Moose Mt. and enjoy the single digit temps and the great view! Go Colts!

i dont get it either. sometimes in the DC area the power goes out after a big thunderstorm. this is in the summer time! we can't even keep our power running in a thunderstorm. lol

i agree w/ Adirondack Jack that it's the branches knocking out power lines. the power company is supposed to be trimming the branches back though. i see them do it along the roads when it's warmer. so what's the deal? maybe because we leave this up to a utility company. dont they have underground power lines in some countries? sounds like a good idea.

the national guard is helping with snow removal and other things, like transporting people without power to ad hoc shelters. some people have been without power for more than 24 hours. i was lucky. they have to keep their water trickling from their faucets to prevent their pipes from freezing. they also empty their refrigerators and put all their food outside in the snow.

some counties have already blown their budgets for snow clearing. i don't know where they're going to get the money from. we pay plenty in taxes.
it's not going to the right places i guess. we're just so used to having a government that does nothing for us, we dont really mind.
