i was about to overtake someone shortly after emerging from a red light. a pick up truck was bearing down on me from the lane i was changing into. Even though I would have gotten ample power from just gunning it in second gear, i made a split second call to downshift to first, rev it for a second to power me forward quickly, upshift to second....and cruise on up. had enough space and all, even with a margin for error....

and then.....

everything came falling apart. what had been a lovely day's ride with not so much as a wheel put wrong over a few hours....turned into a disasterous series of clunks and c0ck-ups that made my stomache churn.

I hit the red line rev limiter almost as soon as i put it into first, then with a rough upshift into second my dark smoke visor popped halfway down. two guys on bikes passed me going the other way no doubt chuckling at my misfortune, as I lurched forward from the turbulence. the people behind me must have backed off expecting some kind of ghastly explosion. the abominable sounds eminating from my dual scorpions were my FZ screaming and screeching in unbearable pain and anguish. there was no explosion, thankfully, but i have scarred her for life. she will never forgive me.

From there, I limped home, full of disgust at the poor control I had displayed. A perfect day's riding was all but forgotten. I have disgraced myself, my machine, and my ancestors.

it was quite honestly the most pitiful example of motorcycling ever witnessed by those present.

and all for a few extra hp from an entirely unnecessary downshift to first...

Now....if you'll excuse me I just vomitted in my mouth a little bit.

indeed.

feel better now. I always try and make a point of being extra smooth and extra precise with everything. And I usually am. felt good to vent when i got home.

That is one reason I have not yet got pipes, any shifting mistake I make will be broadcast for all around to turn and gawk at me . Not to mention when you are hitting it a little hard on the back roads and johnny officer is setting on the side of the road with his windows down he is gonna be ready speed gun in hand.

I'll give you tree fitty for the bike + gear! :rof:

Seriously though.. it's no big deal. I'm sure you learned a lesson and you won't repeat that mistake.
I hit the limiter on ninja 250 quite a few times.. of course that bike had a third of the power of FZ6, so I had a better excuse :D

I thought your story was going to play out differently...

I did almost the exact same thing as you did, took off from a light, went to overtake a vehicle in my lane, got in the other lane and went from 1st gear straight into NEUTRAL.....

Slammed my belly into the tank, made me look like a huge idiot, and then I came so close to puking in my helmet I had to pull over for a couple of minutes.

If we never made mistakes then we would never really learn. At least you came here and shared your story and raised awareness of how we are all human from time to time.

One thing I dislike about full-face helmets---you can't spit and have to unbuckle and raise helmet first. I don't want to think about needing to heave while having a full-face helmet strapped on. OMG!

What's a limiter? Seriously though, we all do things we wish we hadn't, no big deal as long as everything is ok.

Limiters prevent damage to an engine by interrupting the power that is distributed to the spark plugs, this prevents the engine from operating above a pre-determined RPM level known as the red-line.

Limiters , however will not prevent damage to the body will they have2befree?

I read your post about the track accident, I have respect for you doing the track thing. I have been talking to FZ6nick about doing a track day myself but between the cash, gear and bike prep required I have lost a little enthusiasm about the whole thing. Maybe next year.
