Charcoal isn't red when you're using it and its not grey when you throw it away

therefor its coal. charcoal and coal are NOT the same..

charcoal- black substance made by burning wood slowly in an oven with a little air, used as a filtering materialor as fuel or for drawing.

So the difference is that coal is a mineral and charcoal is the ultimate form of burnt wood.
