Synching TB's at first service?

When i bought my bike last weekend i asked the salesman what do they get for their 600 mile service. When he told me around 300 with tax my eyes popped out of my sockets. I did hardly ANY maintenance save for the oil, shaft oil and tires on my vulcan and at 17k miles its been bulletproof. I didnt go to the dealer for the 600 mile service so whats the point with the FZ? I would LIKE to do it myself and save the money. One thing i scoffed at though was when i asked him what gets done he told me the throttle bodies get synced. To myself i thought he was b/s-ing so i asked the guy who did the setup on my bike when i got the "walkaround" and he said he didn't know what that salesman is talking about. I dont see anything about the TB's being synced at 600 miles in the manual can anyone back this up? I could see maybe if there was a problem but so far none...............

Yes, you do have to adjust idle and synch your throttle bodies at the first service. If you want to even do that by yourself, I suggest picking up a throttle body synch tool which will run you about $90 bucks. But the advantage of that being, you can do your synchronizations all by yourself.

Ok, this is for the 2008 model, which is what I have. In the periodic maintenance chart under fuel injection. It says idle adjust and synchronization at 1000km.

Well Day-amm you are correct sadly. I see it in my 09 manual as well. Passed right over it. Time to decide if i really want to tackle that task myself, or shop around for a better 600 mile service price than 300 beans. ugh.

Well it is called for, most likely 9 out of 10 bikes are just fine but it is so easy to do- why not. Yours could be that tenth bike.
I do mine at every oil change, usually close but a little tweak never hurt to help it run smooth. Same with my FJR.

That's beacuse how to adjust the idle and it's setting is shown in your owners manual :rtfm:

The video shows how to sync your throttle bodies, not idle adjustment. The idle adjust screw can be seen at 0:33 in to the video. It is the screw right in the middle of the screen. Start up your bike and bring it up to temperature. Set idle RPM around 1250-1300. That is what the bike bible says.

Wow, that really doesnt seem too hard. Is it the goal to get all the fluid lines at equal height i would assume?

ah dang, i missed that synchronization part :squid:. i'm at 3500 miles and haven't done anything but change the oil (multiple times) and filter. seems like it's running like a champ though.

See thats why I say i bet alot of people dont synch, and their bikes are fine. BUT..............with that being said it would be cool to buy the tool and try it. And i would assume i could use it for my fuel injected Vulcan as well, no? Or do you not need to do this on Vtwins as opposed to inline fours.......

I have the throttle body sync tool, if you're anywhere close to CT we can do both bikes at once! I did mine once already, at first service, did not require any changes.

Yeah the goal is to get all four lines lined up. Some also do this at like 4,000 or 8,000 rpm and set them at this too.

The cost of a Morgan Carbtune is about $100 and I'm looking into getting one. It basically pays for itself after one syncing as your dealer charges around $85 for syncing the throttle bodies.

I'm almost tempted to buy one, then "rent" in on the forums and let it make it's way around North America! Each person just pasy to ship it to the next guy. I know of some local forums that 'share' tools back and forth.
