I had buried this on another thread, but thought I'd try here. Does anyone know the weight of the stock can vs. aftermarket, such as scorpion? Thanks for your help.

Hey, i just finished installing my scorpions and still have the stock exhaust lying around..i'll let you know the weight tomorrow..
for my scorpions.. i forgot to weigh them before i put em on..they felt lighter though..

It feels way different. And people who say something else ... well I guess they don't have any feel with their bike ... sorry :Flash:
The bike feels way more flickable.
Any weight you loose at the top of you're bike will give you a better riding machine.
And indeed loosing 150lbs (no clue how much kg that are) will give you better performance ... :thumbup:

Less weight is usually better but how much can you expect to save by changing the exhaust? 8-10 lbs would be my guess. As far as making the bike handle better; do you think it improves with half a tank of gas as opposed to full? My guess is you never really notice it.
I have done road cycling for a long time and some cyclists get nuts with weight savings. I did, to some extent, but finally realized that it really does not make much difference in the ride. Sure an 18 lb bike feels nicer than a 25 lb one, but when you compare 1-2 lbs, things blur. At the top of the sport even a % can help but not for general fun riding. Also, the latest generation of 14-15 lb bikes give up a fair degree of reliability. Horses for courses.
In the end, most people who get aftermarket pipes do it for the noise and all the other rationalizations just make them feel better. Oh crap! I've started another loud pipes thread. Stupid, stupid, stupid :banghead:

The stock muffler is 12.1 lbs. Dunno what the Scorps weigh.

On my Two Bros, there's about an 8-10 pound weight loss when changing the exhaust. Scorpions are probably about the same.

The TBR catalog I got with my pipes says the stock weight of the OEM system is 16.5 lbs and the TBR system is 8.0 lbs.
A case of beer in your backpack causes a definite change in the way the bike handles.....

If you remove the cat as well, with a aftermarket exhaust its a pretty good saving in weight.
it's a huge saving in weight...wish i had scales here, as i have a OEM set of cans sitting here...

Think of it in the context of the whole package. Sure, 10 lbs feels a lot lighter when just comparing the pipes. But, the bike weighs about 450 lbs and the rider another 150-200lbs. Add that together and and a 10 lbs loss nets you just over 1% off the total weight. It makes no real difference.

I weighed the muffler on a digital scale and got 12.1 lbs. I assume the TBR weight includes the CAT pipe too in order to get the 16 lbs.
My Akrapovic was about 5 to 6 lbs less than the stock muffler.
Not a huge difference but it beats having a toaster oven for a muffler.

Weight is a factor...about 10+ years ago my father-in-law and I had identical Harley Sportster 883's. We would trade off on rides and I would allways out pull him on ethier bike...he was about 70-80lbs heavier. Just my 2-cents. :rockon:

QED. 10 lbs won't make any difference but 80? At that point things will be noticed.

Thanks for the responses. It was curiosity more than anything. Those of you who believe ten pounds do not make a difference obviously don't ride much in the dirt or on the street at a good pace. Manufacturer's spend huge r&d budgets to shave grams off cases, levers, tanks, frames, etc. And...everyone who asks the question is not necessarily a fat arse. I notice that the responders that could not answer the question were reduced to ad hominen drivel.
Weight does make a difference. When I prepped my bike for the track I was able to remove about 18 lbs off the bike and that was after the exhaust was installed, so about 24 to 26 lbs total. The bike was much more flickable an just easier to ride fast. The overall center of gravity was lower which contributed to the flickability.
If I recall correctly a loss of 7 lbs = 1 hp.
