remove cat?

so i tried searching for this, but as i don't even really know what i'm talking about, let me give this a quick go here please...

so i'm walking out to the fizzer a little while ago for a ride and this dude comes running out to me to introduce himself. he has a garage in my condo complex here and has FIVE bikes, and was in the middle of putting a turbo on his VW. point of that intro is that this guy knows what he is doing garage/technical wise. he says his boss has the exact same fizzer, and he took the cat off for him and says it made a huge difference in power. apparently there are a couple under the bike that are monitored by the sensor and if you mess with those you will get an error code. but taking the most rear one to the back pipes off, the one that is about the size of a can of soup and sits perpendicular to the ground (you can tell by now i am horribly non-technical :Flash and replacing with just a straight stainless steel pipe, makes a big difference in power. he offered to do it for 75 bucks and from what he was explaining about it, i am intrigued, but i thought i'd check with the fizzer pros here to see what you all think and if anyone has done it, and what their thoughts about it are please? i just don't have the cash for new cans and if what he is saying is true, 75 bucks sounds reasonable.

type in" cat eliminator pipe" in the mods thread. I've been thinking of doing the mod too. meant to give a couple more HP, more midrange pull. Like you said just take the rear one off that is after the sensor. good luck

He sounds like he knows what he's talking about regarding the FZ6 and the decat. You can buy the pipe pretty cheaply though and fit it yourself. There have been (as always) a couple of people who didn't like the mod - but there always are! :Flip:

I did the mod as part of my air filter, two bros and power commander upgrade and I like it. If he is offering $75.00 to do it including the pipe that's a good deal because I bought an Arrow cat eliminator pipe and it cost me about $90.00 If he wants $75.00 for just the labor then thats a different story, but the dealership would charge you more and since your not mechanically inclined it might still be worth having him do it for you. Just remember to keep your stock cat as they cost over $400.00 new and if your state ever enacts emissions laws you can just slap it back on.

thanks for the info. i did some more searching in the older posts on this and i see that some people have complained that it messes with your idle, but i didnt find any more detail than that? if this is true, how does it affect it exactly and can't it be fixed with adjusting the idle? i just don't want to start sawing pieces off my baby without understanding all potential consequences :thumbup:

I would think that idle issues would be caused by fueling changes (due to flow/backpressure changes)...but the 07+ bikes will re-adjust automatically to changes in flow (because of O2 sensor feedback) at least for idle and part-throttle. The earlier bikes may re-adjust somewhat if the pressure change is reflected in the intake pressure sensor (and the stock map supports that value).

That said, aside from in pure competiton conditions, I'm not sure of the value of removing the CAT (ie work/cost involved + increased pollution) for what will probably ammount to just a couple of HP here and there.

I don't remember if it is all models or just the '07 and up that have the two cats in the headers as well. they sit in those little bulges at the collectors where four go into two pipes. After that, the collect to the single pipe where the sensor is located.

Thus, I ask, what is the effect of removing the back cat and leaving the two fronts? Anyone? I haven't a clue myself and this question is genuine.

man, I got the mivv delete pipe, but now I have a slight leak where the two bros and the cat pipe meet up. I have used copper rtv, clamped the mess out of the pipe, but still has a slight leak.

see, this is a little worrisome. i think if the guy screwed it up i would never forgive myself for allowing such a harsh procedure on mr. fizz. the way he made it sound the guy he did it for thought it was like night and day. i kinda wanted to talk to the guy directly but didn't ask for his info. its things like this that make me wonder if the performance was really that much better, yamaha wouldn't have put that thing on there in the first place. it's gotta be there for something. decisions, decisions.

If the guy used an actual pipe made for the bike or is really good with making exhausts it would probably come out fine. If he was talking about hacking off your cat and crudely rigging something up I would probably pass. As someone said earlier catalytic converters are expensive.

This is the major point! The cat is part of a short pipe that is easy to take off and put back on if needed. The best solution for you is if the guy is thinking about buying or making a replacement pipe to go there instead. If you don't like it, no problem - just spend half hour putting the original one back on and sell the one he made/bought on ebay!

If he is planning on just drilling the insides out of the cat, then beware! This will create a large bulge in the pipe that will probably make the performance worse not better. Also there will be no way to go back to stock easily. It would be okay if he was planning to weld a pipe inside the existing cat so there is no expansion - but that is still reversable.

I've done the cat elim mod and haven't had any problems. I bought the MIVV cat elim pipe from PJ's Parts... WOOT PJ's RULEZ!!!! :rockon: I also have 2 Bros exhaust. I kept my original cat. The weight you drop is worth the mod IMHO because the cat is so damn heavy. With the stock exhaust gone and the cat gone, I've drop a significant amount of weight and heat. Power to weight ratio....

IMHO, I wouldn't go the route of moding the stock cat pipe itself (cutting it or drilling it) because you might need it in he future. Spend the extra cash and buy a cat elim pipe or have someone make you one.
