gearing changes

I was looking into different sprocket set ups to get a little more torque out of the detuned r6 motor. Doing some math and using the redline as a limit, i have found on paper that a change to a 15/48 set up (-1/+2) would yeild about 3.3 pounds more torque and limit the (on paper) 169 mph max speed to about 154. So about 135 in real life due to me being a bigger guy. I am more about the twists of a good road and the enjoyment of a hard ride than the enjoyment of how much money can buy speed at the turn of the wrist (yea, i am dissing you busa people :eek:). But thats just me at this time.

Has anyone else done the math/actual conversion to coincide with this idea?

Also, does a high grade 520 chain really make that much of a difference on the FZ6's OEM 530 chain?

I'll be happy to let you know in a few days about the 520 conversion and I've gone -2 On the front. I'll let you know how that goes...I'm getting pretty excited about it I can tell you...lol.:thumbup:
 
Why does everybody think the final drive ratio can affect power?

It affects applied torque by changing the mechanical advantage. Just as shifting down gives you "more power" changing the gearing does the same.

If you don't believe me get on any realistic racing game, Forza, Grand Tourismo, and change the final drive gearing in the car to as close to 1:1 as it will let you. Then drive it. Then change it to as close to 999999:1 as it will let you and drive it again.

the 3 pounds of torque i was talking about was not in the engine itself. You cant create power without modifying something that has to do with engine itself, of course. But changing the gearing from a 3.0 to a 3.33 on paper will create a power delivery change to make the equivalence of an engine mod to have 3 more pounds of torque. Although doing the math from knowledge of calculus from college, and not having the proper equation tables, I was hoping that someone here has done the mod/math before and would know if this is correct.

Hehe I've tuned plenty of cars in forza2
The final drive affects how many times the transmission output spins in relation to the wheel(s).
Higher number = Less wheel rotations per output, thus faster acceleration because the engine/driveline has less resistance.
Lower number = More wheel rotations per output, this more resistance and unless you have a torquey motor, it takes longer to get to high speeds.

Yes, a higher number will improve acceleration and make the bike feel much faster, however your top speed will be decreased and you'll be shifting at lower speeds.
IMHO, if you want top speed, buy a busa. Acceleration and corner exit are far more important to me than felony speeding.
 
I'm gonna have to look into this next season when I have some more money available to spend on the FZ6. I rarely exceed the speed limit by more than a few miles, but I'd love to decrease the time it takes to get there =)

Well in that case...it's a no brainer, do the sprocket mod, -2 on the front shoulds give you what you want, If you really wanna lose top gear as an overdrive, go +1 on the rear.

And if your worried about touring with that gearing...dont, i have done 5800km's of touring with that gearing in the last 3 months, and it was no stress....
