Windscreen Advice

You're 5' 4" and need a taller windscreen?? Whaaaa?

I'm 5'3" and agree on the taller windscreen. The airflow would hit a taller person in their chests and not be a problem; in fact, it is actually more comfortable having the airstream lifting the chest and shoulders off the handlebars. But for us shorties, the airflow hits us right smack dab in our face shields causing head buffeting and lots of noise. I bought the taller Yamaha windscreen, installed my self (easy) and it's 1000% better. Air flow now goes over the top of my helmet. It's a few inches taller and wider, doesn't in any way interfere with view over the top of the shield, but makes a huge difference.

I have the same one and yes it makes a difference for me too, I'm 6ft.
 
I did a thread on here called "2006 windscreen mod", if you do a search you will find it. What I discovered is that making the screen higher does not significantly improve the windflow.

The Puig DB gets differing results aand I believe that a lot of that relates to the height of the rider, taller riders seem to benifit from the DB more. I am 5`9" tall and have a DB and do not think it is a lot different from the stock, except that it looks a lot better.

What I did notice is that the guys with naked bikes never complain about wind buffeting. With that in mind I took a hacksaw and chopped my stock screen down to the base of the mirrors. The difference is immediate and very suprising. All that buffeting goes straight away and contrary to popular belief you don`t get blown off the bike. The size of the screen has no effect on the rain...you get wet anyway.

A few of the guys have done this and I have not heard of anyone who does not like the result. When I ride locally I use the DB for the looks. When I go long distance like from Denmark to France, I use the cut down screen.

Look at the 2006 windscreen mod thread and you will get other opinions and pics of how easy it is to do.

+1 on that.... I have ridden harleys and other bikes with larger windscreens and one with what amounted to a full on windshield and any amount of direct wind exposure you're spared through the taller windscreen comes back to bite you in the form of air turbulence as you are increasing the surface area (and often the bluntness) of one of the first objects to be cutting into the wind. I have found the smaller the profile of the bike, the better it rides in the wind....but that's just me. (bare in mind I ride my FZ pretty hard, so I'm experiencing 80-100+ mph winds on a daily basis. for someone not riding as fast the effects may indeed be different.)
 
I bought the Puig, which looked great, but did not really solve the problem. Less buffeting, but still alot of noise. I then cut my original screen down as steve suggested, much quiter now, but I like the looks of the Puig. I think I'll get a better helmet, I currently have HJC. I'd like to try a Shoei RF1000 and the taller Puig together.

Those giant barn door-like windshields on cruisers are definitely a different "animal" in windy conditions. Many years ago I used to ride a V-Star Silverado and that slab of plastic acted like a sail.

The taller Yamaha shield has a totally different profile. It is 2" taller but with the same aerodynamic curvature, and with 1.5" wider "wings" on each side. It makes an enormous difference. I ride my FZ hard, too, on the interstate moving slightly faster than prevailing traffic, pushing 600-700 mile days for multiple days and in headwinds and crosswinds sometimes in excess of 35 mph here in Texas. In those conditions my FZ is quieter and with less turbulence than my BMW, which has a ZTechnik shield.

A different helmet can really help as can a new helmet of the same brand. Padding breaks down after a while and the helmet doesn't fit as well as it did when new. I found this especially true with HJC before I switched to Arai. I put a ZTechnik shield on my BMW and picked up a whistle which was really annoying. I discovered that by changing out the cheek pads to the next thicker size, I eliminated the whistling completely.
 
I appreciate all the advice. The wind is actually hitting me more in the throat /face at this point (had a bad case of laryngitis after my first ride) so I'm not sure if I need to go higher or lower. I never thought about the wind noise as I know that my helmet is noisy and attributed it to that - I have problems finding a correct fitting helmet too (even the most expensive brands!) LOL. Do you know how much taller the Puig Racing Shield is from the stock? Obviously I don't need a lot more height and I don't want it to be like a sail (had that with a cruiser once).

I will now check out the 2006 Windscreen Mod thread.
