Bikes with 3 Wheels

What do you guys think of the "bikes" with 3 wheels - like the Can am Spyder and the T-Rex?

I personally would never buy one - even if I had all the money in the world. I see a lot of women who drive them (not that there's anything wrong with that). I think its for riders who aren't comfortable driving on 2 wheels, and feel safer on 3.

I'm probably going to get flamed for saying this - but I make it a note to blow by those riding em at the highest rpm i can. I've heard they're quick but all who I've encountered riding them go excessively slow.

Just my thoughts, curious what you all thought.

I really like the looks of the Can Am Spyder but the T-rex isn't really even a motorcycle anymore. For the price of the T-rex i'd definitely find something different.

i think the spyder is a lame excuse for a motorcycle, but i think the TRex is just a bad A$$ little go kart on steroids... i would LOVE to have one of them things... prettym much for no other reason than to drive a beefy go kart on the highway at 80mph

I don't think they are bikes. They are what give motorcycles the bad preconception of being toys. Most people who own them just have them because they have money.

I've seen a few around town, all they really are is a giant scooter. No power, heavy and handle horribly. I see no purpose for them but a toy, especially when you consider the price...

I agree the Spyder is a niche bike for sure. It's quite expensive, and it seems the only people who can afford one, are folks going through a middle age crisis.

Naw. I'll just get a Ural. Sidecars are cool. At least they look like motorcycles and you can go off-road with them.

I don't care for them but see a use. I'd have a Spyder if, for any reason, I couldn't use two wheels, like a leg/knee/foot problem that stopped me from being able to get on of off my bike or come to a stop and hold it up. Hoping that day never comes but it sure is nice to have this as an option to enjoy the road while handicapped. From what I understand, CanAm actually has one with all controls on the bars for paraplegics.

My mate's wife has the Spyder, she doesn't have the confidence to ride a two wheeler but was desperate to go on trips with her husband and the rest of the guys, but not as a pillion passenger, this way she has her own independence, she passed her test 1st time and now rides with everyone else:thumbup: so IMO the Spyder fits that bill without any doubt. :thumbup::thumbup:

I see her all the time in the summer riding around:rockon:

Just for your information though you wouldn't get me on one if you had my B***s in a vice, give me a real bike any day!!!! LOL

I took advantage of the "pilots wanted" promotion that CanAm had last summer and rode a Spyder. It was fun but really kind of weird. I owned several Honda 3 wheelers (dirt type) and it is similar to those only with computer sophistication on the drive train. Although it was fun for a test ride I agree with a former MC sales woman that said "it's a lot of fun to ride but not worth the space it would take up in the garage". 'Nough said...

Is the Spyder considered a bike? If so, and a person cannot drive a cycle but can drive the Spyder, how does that person pass the motorcycle exam for a license? Never thought about that aspect until your message. :don'tknow:

Mr Gabbard is in his 80s rode bikes since the 40s Now is just to old to ride bikes anymore (his words not mine) He rides a spyder. Its pretty cool. If I couldnt ride on two anymore I would ride a piaggo MP3

I think those things are cool looking. The key issue would be if they are a "motorcycle" for purposes of carpooling (at least in CA, a motorcycle can go in the carpool lane). If that was true, it would have a legitimate purpose as a commuter, probably with decent gas mileage. I bet they are far safer than a motorcycle too. Not only do you have more bulk and visibility, but you can't tip them over. Lose traction on 1, 2, or 3 wheels, you're probably still okay. Lose traction on one on a motorcycle, you're probably going down.

IMO more car than bike. Didn't the paraplegic guy in BikerBoys drive (note I said DRIVE not RIDE) a T-Rex type vehicle? That was a pretty fun film. I gotta watch it again in a bit.

Not my cup of tea but the KTM thingy looks like fun. As for the "3" wheeled moto's there OK never drove one but it kinda defeats the purpose of having a cycle doesn't it? :spank::spank::spank:

The Piaggio MP3 is pretty cool. It can lean like a real bike (or scooter) but it can also ride like a car. Checkout the videos of it!

One of our members in the South bay riders group has one..its a beaty to the eyes...but...ummm I doubt if I would buy one someday. it looks more like a tranny....the fun we get in 2 wheels when u lean in the turns..or shift gears..etc is something which I feel we might miss in these 3 wheelers. I would stick with the 2 wheels...especially FZ6:rockon:

A buddy of mine's father has a trike not a spyder, but he has the trike because he does not have the strength in his legs to hold the bike up anymore, but he loves to ride. It is a nice bike, and I do not see a problem with someone riding them if that is what they like. If it wasn't for a trike, he would not be able to ride anymore. I say to each his own.
