ok.. i think this classifies as a mod.. i really think that my 05 (silver frame) would look sweet with a set of the black .. uh, rims?? so.. has anyone does this.. or had theirs powder coated?? how much does it normaly run.. any special care involved afterwards??? pics???

My 05 Silver frame came stock with black wheels. Strange that depending on where you bought your silver FZ6, some came with black and others with silver wheels.

Here are some older pics of mine:

Powder coating would be the best and most robust options to go with. Once powder coated, there is no real maintenance or upkeep that you nede to do to them after the fact.

As for cost, my guess the whole process would cost you around $200 total. If you do the wheel removal yourself, then they have to sand blast and prep the wheel before PC'ing it. Then re-mount your rubber and back on the bike. Best way to get an accurate price is call up a local powder coating shop and ask ho much for prep and coating. Then call your local bike shop and ask how much for un-mounting nad re-mounting your tires.

Mine came with the silver wheels and was the only thing I didn't like.

I polished the rims and painted the spokes black. Not a good pic but all I got at the moment.Took about 3-4 hours to do and cost about $60.

Thanks mate.Havent got anymore pics handy but I can take some over the next couple of days if you want to see more. But all I did was mask off the tyre and centre with masking tape ,apply paint stripper and leave it till the paint bubbles then scrub it off with steel wool.

After that just polish like crazy and you get a very presentable finish
When I painted the spokes I didn't even bother to mask off because the lip on the wheel will give you a straight edge .Just paint and wipe the overspray off the rim with a rag dipped in metho or white spirit and just push right up to the lip with your finger.Bit of elbow grease and your good to go.

Damn, how'd you get them so shiny?

I didnt, that's how they came back from the Polishers...keeping them that way is the trick...Autosol, lots of it, truckloads of elbow grease, and normally skun knuckles from the Wave Discs i have on my bike!

It's a labour of love, let me tell you...took me 3 hours to clean & polish them after a recent trip of 2500km's through rain, dust, a new chain, etc...

If you dont like cleaning your bike...dont get all of the wheel polished....

I just love cleaning my bike, so it doesnt bother me enough to drive me nuts...

I will vouch for wolfman on this one...I polished the wheels on my car....what a PITA!!!!! If you aren't patient enough to spend hours cleaning you rims don;t do it. But I could give a little "how to polish aluminum" if anyone is interested.
