Computer VIDEO Help

ok.. i dunno if this is the right thread, but anyways.. i am in hte market for some upgrades to my computer..I'll explain what i want to do and then if someone could give me some recomendations, that would be great..

i am going to build my next computer. I am needing to buy a mother board and a new processor. I really want to be able to encode dvd's into ipod movies. I want to be able to encode my moveis when im on the bike (I have an assortment for cameras, so i would need to be abel to put all the video together and then encode it. For those understanding what im saying, what speed cpu am i going to end up looking at. I dont want super uber fast, just something that could encode say a 30 min movie in like 15 mins or less.. I have been looking at the quad corre processors, but i dont think im going to go to vista anytimesoon, so i was wondering if i could get away with just a duel core cpu for a year or so till i buy a new dell.. any help.. thanks all :thumbup:

Hi, I am back into video after a time away and have a new HD Camcorder that uses AVCHD files that are huge.
I use a dual core pentium with 2 gb of ram and whilst Pinnacle Studio is a bit slow it manages... just about.
I think more memory may be the way to go rather than upgrade my processor/motherboard.

I think if you are dealing in mpeg files then you should have no problems with dual core.

I would expect someone a bit more knowledgable may come along soon though.

ok.. just so you know. my cpu is single core and i have no idea how fast. I know its up there, but the computer is 5 years old. Im just looking for some recomendations for CPU's that will be able to encode at a fast rate. somewhere like 20 min movies will take less that 20 mins ya know what i mean.

First off all:
What is your budget?

When we deal with Video, the primary bottle neck will be your harddrive!
Running a set of Seagate's 15.5K drives in a RAID0 config should give you adjudicate performance, given that you have enough RAM.

The good thing about Vista is that it can handle more that 2Gb of RAM (After service pack 1 that is).
However you should get the 64bit edition, since the 32bit will only handle 4Gb of RAM. (Actually it only handles 3½Gb of RAM, but we normally round it up to 4).

Running a 6 or 8GB RAM config, using DDR3 1600Mhz modules would be preferable. (Again,- this can ONLY be done under Vista64bit or Linux64Bit).

As for a graphics card, one of the best options right now performance and compatibility wise is a Nvidia GeForce GTX285 based card.

Motherboard: Asus is always a good choice; right now I would go for a Asus's P6T Deluxe Palm Edition. It has room for 6 memory modules, plenty of USB ports and supports Nvidia SLI.

As for the CPU, - the Intel Core i7 is a safe choise. Let your wallet decide weather you get the 920, 940 or the 965.

I do not think your asking for too high a spec. A Good dual core CPU (Quad Intel preferred) and plenty of memory if using Vista (avoid if possible ) and I'm sure you'll be fine. Remember try to keep it balanced.

Good power supply is also an over looked requirement.

Some nice quiet fans as well. One of my boxes sounds like a jet fighter on re-heat when the fans kick in.

Always do your specification first before your budget. Otherwise you end up restricting your specification and never end up with what you really need. As funds become available get what you require.:thumbup:

If you go into your control panel and click on system, you should get a dialog box with the specs for your current machine.

For video encoding processing power is key, and having an O/S that can use the full potential of multiple core CPU's. I have an AMD dual core at 3 Ghz, so as I run a 64bit O/S (Ubuntu 64bit edition) that gives me 6 Ghz of true processing power as it can use both cores simultaneously. A 30 min video from Raw DV to DVD ready Mpeg takes me 30 mins.

What about a capture card that will encode video while it's being streamed in to the pc? This way you can take the card with you to your next pc.

A lot of good advise here. I agree with the i7 chip and the software to support multi-core processing. Also at least 4gb of DDR3 ram and a fast hard drive.

I know it isn't friendly on the wallet but I personally think you should get a Mac:thumbup:
