Deductible= $100.00 Last crash expense= $3,500 Insurance went up $6.00 annually. Typical sportbike crash sliders or not= Total
Deductibles vary. My FZ6 isn't even worth 3,500 as is (apples to oranges). Regarding $6 annually, I suspect you fit a very low risk profile based on your age etc. and we're not talking about HD's here (I take it you were not at fault?)!
EDIT - glad you made it out safe!
I completely disagree that the typical sportbike crash [that does not involve hitting a large object] = total.
Like I said originally, sliders have very limited save factors and crashes will often be beyond the scope of their respective abilities.
This is a very poor argument against using them. You can say the same about a lot of precautions people take...not a reason by itself not to be careful.
I have never used sliders on my FZ6 and probably won't for this very reason.
The reason being they "stripped his frame like a bottle opener" = cheap sliders + bad crash!
one thing is for certain, they dang sure won't help protect much.
Maybe not on a chromed out HD where most of the value is in the looks. On an FZ6 where most of the value is tied up in performance, they protect much!
BTW, I rode the Harley 38 miles home and insurance is a relative factor as you pay for what you get. Dealing with the insurance company was awesome and I have no regrets for paying more as it was well worth it. The cost annually for that bike is under $300 per year. The FZ6, which is worth half as much is double that of the Harley. To me, simply paying for liability is a fools bet as you will typically lose.
Ha! I'm 25 and insure my FZ6 for $160/year (liability and theft) in Chicago! I've run the numbers, considered my FZ6's value, my riding style and location, and made the call (it was a hard one to make). That said, if I had a different bike etc., I may go a different route as I have with my cars. Looking back, I made the right call but you know what they say about hindsight...

Point is, we can find specific examples to support or go against sliders all day which will get us no where because, as you know, every crash is different. The fact that they become irrelevant in many crashes is not a reason not to use them.
The odds favor a slider equipped bike vs. a nonslider equipped bike which really should end the discussion. Can anyone say otherwise?
