New Rider

hey i've been riding for almost a year now on a ninja 07, and just recently i bought the 08 fz6. I'm new to bikes in general and see a ton of mods available. I guess my question would be where do I start. Are there any essential modifications I should do to my bike?

I'm not really familiar with the parts of the bike, or for that matter the benefits that some of these mods have to offer. Like a frame slider, what is a frame slider? what would the purpose be for upgrading my exhaust or sprockets or rotors be. I was going to start with the headlight mod for improved visibility, and because its cheap.

On top of that is there a Clymers or Haynes book available for the 08 FZ6? I couldn't find it, maybe it takes til 09 for it to come out. I want a book that will give me the lowdown on how the bike works.

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Step 1: Download the service manual from this site. Put it next to your Bible, Koran or whatever. Then do the same for Twist of the Wrist II (available on this site as well).
Step 2: Buy frame sliders. Go in to any moto dealer and you shouldn't have to pay over $50 for a good set. They prevent damage to the frame if the bike goes down (and helps protect expensive fairing parts too)
Step 3: Mod #2: lots of miles
Step 4: Before making it any faster than it is, feel it out. Paint some pieces but if you can't ride the bike to it's full potential, then you're just modding the bike for looks.
Step 5: Ask questions here on the forum! You can do it!

There is a Haynes manual available, I purchased it directly from the Haynes website.

This Forum is alot of fun and very informative. They guys and girls just crack me up!
One thing you will soon notice is your FZ6 sounds like a sewing machine.
Start saving now for some aftermarket pipes as they are pricey.
Once you have spent the bucks however, it is well worth it.
The rest of the mods are mostly inexpensive so you can do what you want
as you get ready.
Mostly just have fun and look at alot of other bikes to see what to do
and what not to do.

+1 to that...I've saved a few member's bike pics for my "future mod list" which includes fairings, painting and technical mods too.

If your doing a headlight mod I suggest seeing if Bikerdude43 is still selling the harness he makes. Its very easy to put on and requires no splicing. Then just buy nice bulbs to go with it.

If you want to make the rear look really nice try a FE from sportbikes.net in their store the FAZR6 FE Kit. It uses all stock lights and its a good price. A bunch of people in these forums have it. (You can also find it on ebay sometimes.)

First mod should be frame sliders. Protect your investment. Search this site and the web for details. I suggest Shogun sliders (cheap and quite good). If (when) your bike goes over, they'll keep major damage at bay. One drop and they pay for themselves several times over.

I'm not into 'style' mods, but lots of folks want to clean up the way the tail looks (fender eliminator) and put on aftermarket pipes (doesn't improve performance much but likely sounds a lot better - this bike is pretty close to optimal performance from the factory). Personally, I put comfort mods (e.g., taller windshield) at the top of my list.

You should DEFINITELY consider the bd43 headlight mod (look under the mod section). It's easy to do and well worth it.

Get a tankbag if you want a bit of storage space. There are many storage options for our bikes.

thats just what i want to start, definitly aftermarket exhausts and a FE with some led signals, maybe rip off the fairings and headlight and make it naked one day, other than that most of the cosmetics seem easy and inexpensive.

are there any advantages to buying the racing levers on ebay, or is it purely cosmetic?
