F-Trip longevity

I'm with Vegas. I usually ride 35 miles or so on f trip blinking, unless I find a good gas price or I'm doing another Iron butt.

I was reading something the other day about filling the tank when it is half full, something to with expansion I think. I would never be on the bike if that was the case.

I usually fill up as soon as I can after the F trip starts flashing.

I hate seeing reserves coming on, dont want to use the last part if possible, in case any crap in bottom of tank.

here's my FZ6 story low on fuel???



on my R1 I've gone 24.6 miles and it took a full 4.7 gallons to fill it up.( for those who don't know the R1 has a 4.7 gallon tank)

I don't know if this makes any sense, but the dealer told my buddy with the BMW1200S that it's not a good idea to run dry as the fuel actually keeps the electric fuel pump cool? Wonder if that would apply to the fizzer. :don'tknow:

I'm not sure how well the fuel is cooled in the fz6 tank (but I like to think it is at least some amount). I suspect heat from not having enough fuel to cool the pump, and, condensation from always running around with an empty tank (at this time of year temp between night and day fluctuates big) are 2 of the hardest "normal" occurances in an automotive type fuel system.

For those reasons I try to keep my tank reasonably "full.... ish".

the fuel doesn't really act as a coolant, it's more like a lubricant. if you ever find yourself out of fuel, you should turn off the engine at the bar switch if you still need your lights. that will shut off the fuel pump, so you don't burn it up.

One important thing to consider is that most fuel has contaminants and other small particles of dirt that collect in the bottom of a tank. So it is also wise to not run dry everytime as you suck up those particles and possibly cause gunk and clogs in the fuel pump/filter. I know that is why I like to fill up with 1/4 tank left in my cars, not sure if same situation with bikes but even so I fill up once I see the F-trip.

Another thing to consider is DONT get gas when you see a fuel tanker filling up the stations supply. The pressure/blast of filling up those tanks mixes up the crap in the bottom of the tanks and makes it easier for them to be pumped into your vehicles...just something to consider guys.
