I will have to strongly disagree with you on this John, if a horn is used correctly, which is ahead of time, not after the fact or during the incident when it's too late, it can prevent car vs bike encounters significantly. It has saved my ass a number of times, and others on this fourm as well. It's one of the defensive tools that are available for us riders, which works great if used at the correct time. That is why it is critical to have the ability to use it. Most rider's instict is to grab the brakes, which is fine because if a collision is imminent, you need to slow down as much as possible for the impact. However, under certain situations, I think the horn could prevent many of the crashes that I have read on this forum. I'm not saying that this was the case for Steve, but maybe for some others. IMO of course.
