There is nothing wrong with riding in formation sounds like their formation was either to close together or they where not paying attention.

I should have been clearer. I did say close formation. What I mean by that is damned near wheel to wheel, or side by side like they used to do on CHIPS. At highway speeds, bikes in a formation should be spaced much farther apart than what you generally see.

They were probably like this: ======, not this _-_-_-_-. The staggered column allows you to see better and have more distance to react.

I've raced bicycles for years and the key not going down in a large group is to, 1) communicate, hand and arm signals, 2) not look at the rider in front of you but 2 to 4 riders in front of you. Many times a rider will fix on the person directly in front of them and zone out.
