Would you give it up

Already touched on with if it was a bicycle or car or whatever. Life has inherent risks. People die without leaving their homes. Even if you stop riding you will still be exposed to life's risks elsewhere. Planes crash, trains crash, cars crash... there are just things you can't avoid.

I also agree your dad is feeling guilty and greatly admire your respect for his feelings. I was going to tell my folks in December (while visiting) that I got a motorcycle. During my visit he gets a phone call from a friend that says he's in the hospital. Found out he fell on his Harley, hit his head (which knocked him unconscious) and broke his arm. I'm pretty sure he wasn't wearing a helmet and he was in his work clothes with no protective gear. My dad ranted on how just the prior week he had been telling his bud to stop riding and sell the bike. Needless to say I didn't tell them I bought a bike, that would've caused Mt. St. Helens all over again.

Kudos on waiting and letting your dad go through the emotional roller coaster he's on without adding more stress until he mellows out.

The cash alone wouldn't make me quit riding. I'm a cop and my wife is an ER nurse. I understand the dangers and try to protect myself accordingly. I'm an ATGATT rider and have taken the MSF classes to improve my riding.

My parents don't like the idea of me having a bike, but they do respect my right to live my own life.

There are two things that will cause me to give up riding. #1. would be if my daughter told me that she was worried about the motorcycle, and if I would be around for her. #2. would be a decline in my health or mental sharpness.

My parents have been begging me for years to stop riding, and became even more adament about it after I was involved in an accident last year, but I wont give it up. It is part of who I am at this point.

Even with my wreck today, my first thought after I got over the shock was "So since my bike is now totaled, what kind do I want to buy next?"
