Wire for replacing indicators

Hi,

I've got a 2005 FZ6N. The previous owner added a tail tidy which looks great. However, the wiring for the indicators and numberplate light is shoddy. I get shorts on the left indicator which stops it from flashing and the rear numberplate light has given up all together. A wiggle of the cable brings it back to life. It's the dodgy connections.

I want to replace the wiring as it's too short to just swap the bullet connectors over and tidy it up. What thickness of wire do i need for this purpose? I'm not sure how to measure the thickness of the existing wire, so thought it best to ask. Do i include the plastic sheathing or just measure the copper wire?

I just completed a front and rear turn signal project on my 2007 FZ6.

The previous owner installed a fender eliminator with LED's and some front LED turn signals, but his wiring job was a bit shoddy. I added some brighter LED's for the front, too...

I used 22ga primary wire to add length to some of the stock harnesses - this can be purchased from Radio Shack. Most auto parts stores only go to 20ga.

Do you know how to solder? If so, the most reliable way to form a connection is to slip some heat shrink tubing on the wire (away from the splice), twist the two wires together, solder the connection, move the heatshrink over the new splice, and shrink it down with a heat gun. Presto! You now have a connection that will not fail.

If soldering isn't your thing, you can purchase "heat shrink butt splices" from an auto parts store/home depot. Insert the wires in each end, crimp them down, and then use a heat gun to shrink the outside covering. This results in a waterproof and durable connection. Look for the ones that accept 22ga wiring (they should be pink).

That's just what i was after. Many thanks. My soldering isn't too bad so i think i'll go down that route. As you said, it'll be more reliable.

Hi,

Sorted the wiring for the indicators. Soldered then heat shrinked. Looks much more professional now.

I've got a tail tidy too, which used the original indicators and numberplate light. The indicators look fine and fit well, but the numberplate light doesn't. It's too big for the mounting point and detracts from the overall appearance.

Any ideas on another numberplate light i could use in its place? Don't want it to cost a fortune though.

Sorry for the delay in sorting a picture.

The numberplate light currently fitted is the original one that came off when the tail tidy was put on. I've seen a small chrome led light on ebay for a few quid and was wondering if that would fit better.

The current one doesn't fit that well as the mounting hole on the tail tidy is at a bit of an angle so the light wants to tip backwards but can't because the exhaust pipe bracket stops it. It just looks messy.

I like the leds. I may have to invest in a different tail tidy now i've seen yours!

I like it when all you can really see is the numberplate. Why don't the manufacturers make the back end more appealing from the offset?! The original one is plastic everywhere.
