I am looking for a black upper fairing/cowling, and have confirmed through photographs that the 2004 models came stock with a black upper fairing/cowling (the plastic part that goes around the headlights and the side pods are attached to).

I am hoping to install a black upper fairing/cowling on to my 2006 red fz6...i prefer the black red contrast as opposed to the all red color of the upper fairing/side pods/tank.

Can somebody confirm which years came with a black upper fairing/cowling?

In 2007, Yamaha redesigned the fairing. Then, in 2008, they changed to the black cowl that you are speaking of. But I do not know if they had that black cowl on the 2004-2006 models (pre redesign).

Thanks for the replies. Here are two photographs to explain what i am looking to do. The silver/black bike is either a 2004 or 2005, and the red one is a 2006, with a black upper fairing colored in (instead of the OEM red upper fairing).

I am hoping to be able to buy a black upper fairing for a 2004 or 2005 without having to paint it black, but I cannot confirm that 2004 or 2005 came with black fairings.

'04 and '05 US models had the black 'inner' fairing. If you plan on ordering new parts, check the pricing on each model year..... even the exact same parts price will vary one year to the next.....

There's also a chance someone who is making their bike 'naked' has the parts you want sitting around, as well as someone else who may want to trade.....

RJ2112, thats exactly what I am finding out. I have found a black inner fairing for a 2004 for ~$75, but for a 2005, the same piece has a slightly different part number, and it costs ~$100.

the same piece for a 2006 (in red) goes for ~$250...i suspect because it has been painted.

As I only owned the 2005 model, I can't say for a fact that the black inner pieces are EXACTLY the same shade of black, '04 to '05.... but in your case, would that really matter?

thats the other unknown, if the black from year to year is the same shade...probably wont matter in my case, unless there is a big difference between the black inner piece and my current OEM black fender.
