First, I picked up my bike from the shop Thursday after receiving its 600 mile service, not bad for a new rider considering I just bought it 1 month prior. I think it felt a little smother and it definitely runs cooler since.
I signed up with Awesome Motorcycle school over in North Houston (I must acknowledge them they were, well Awesome of course) anyway it was a three day course Friday evening, and Saturday and Sunday morning. Saturday I had the bright idea that I would ride the bike to school, so at about 5:30am I left here in south of Houston heading to north Houston on interstate 45. It was pretty cool, there were more cars than I thought there would be, not bad, but I had to maintain 80mph or so just to stay with the flow of the faster traffic. I arrived ok and realized how much adrenalin pumping fun I just had. There was no way I was getting back on that freeway for the ride home though, it would have been a madhouse and I don’t feel comfortable doing that yet. I had an alternate route planned and it wasn’t too bad except I hit a detour from construction. Wow it was a mile of move 3 feet, stop, move 3 feet, stop, it lasted about an hour. The kicker was that it was in the mid 90’s, humid, not even a fly fart worth of a breeze, and of course I was in full gear. I got so hot I could feel my pulse expand my head in my helmet at every beat. Anyway it took 3 hours to get home, I was exhausted. I drove the car today.
The school was good I didn’t realize how basic it was going to be but I did learn some things but most I’ve already read about in “sport riding techniques” and “twist of the wrist”. It was worth it and it will be very helpful when I go get my “M” on my license. There were a few that in class that I like to take life insurance out of if they buy a bike. One thing I did enjoy was leaning harder in turns with their bike, it will be a long time before I do it on mine. Like the instructor said "it's better to drop our bikes than yours.
Oh when I was rolling(<5mph) to a stop light yesterday a car almost rear ended another right next to me, the screeching tires scared/startled me so much I almost fell over when I lock up the front tire.
I think I’m becoming one of those motorcycle people. Something you just don’t understand until you have one of your own.
