So I got a Tom Tom Rider 2 GPS a day ago. I was pretty hyped at first but then I got to actually use it ...
First of all my headset didn't work out of the box. I thought "not a biggie", I wasn't going to use it anyway. I turn the GPS on and every single time I enter the menu the GPS would show me a big-ass few seconds long warning message that my headset is not connected. I turned the sound off, turned the speech off, turned the headset off and then turned the bluetooth off. Well the GPS didn't get my drift so it continued showing me the god-damned warning message although I APPARENTLY don't want to use their broken headset.
I then tried using the device ...
Power button was the biggest pain in the ass power button I've ever used. I had to concentrate on pressing it HARD with the tip of my finger to get it to turn the device on or off.
Then the gps did not recognize my fingers. I thought I couldn't browse the map for good 5 minutes until I accidentally used my nail on the screen and the map finally moved. The device would also think that I'm pressing a button when all I'm doing is trying to scroll through the map (mind you, my fingers are in no way touching any buttons on the screen).
Another things that i really hated about this gps is the "Back button". so you go to change something in the settings, you go to the menu, hit settings, browse 6 pages, get in a sub menu, change something and now you want to go back to change something else in that same sub-menu ... but you can't do that because the back button will take you all the way back to displaying the map. So if you want to change a bunch of settings you always have to navigate through the same menus OVER and OVER again.
Yet another really annoying thing is that essential options such as browsing the map are on the second page of the menu because the first page is always full of some auxiliary useless buttons that can easily go to page 2 or 3.
Also, whenever you decide to drag your finger across the map to scroll through and see where you're headed the GPS will open up the menu and then activate a bunch of buttons that your finger went over while trying to drag the map. I know I know - if dragging doesn't work, well, just don't drag your finger. You are right but why the hell isn't dragging working and why do I have to click 3 times on the screen to finally browse the map? It just doesn't make ANY sense.
Now consider the following scenario: you are headed to your destination when you decide you want to add an additional checkpoint that's off your original route.
This is how my old $100 Garmin would handle it:
1. Drag your finger over the map.
2. Select a point on the map where you want to go
3. Click "Add as through point"
4. Done
This is how the Tom Tom Rider 2 does it:
1. Click on the map to open the menu
2. Go to page 2 of the menu
3. Hit "Browse map" button
4. Select a point on the map
5. Hit another button that brings up an additional menu (forgot the name of the button)
6. select "Add as through point"
7. Done
Now combine the previous 7 steps with the GPS detecting you're clicking "Done" or clicking the zoom buttons while all you're doing is trying to scroll through the map ...
Another annoying thing: the Rider 2 recognizes your fingers best when you're wearing gloves or using your nails (you stand no chance to accomplish whatever when using your bare fingers on the device). Well, the zoom buttons are always in the corners of the screen and since the frame stays a little higher than the actual screen it's a real PITA trying to use the zoom buttons wearing your gloves as you keep on clicking other stuff or not click anything at all.
All in all the Tom Tom Rider 2 is a TERRIBLE device in my humble opinion. I know some of you are probably using it and loving it but all those things just get on my nerves big time. I opened up the box at 2pm, played around with it for a couple of hours and got it all back in the box at 6pm ready to get shipped back to new egg. I'm getting my money back ( -$60 restocking fee) and I'm getting the Garmin GPS.
So yeah, that's my personal review and opinion about this device. From now on I'm only buying Garmin. I don't know who's working on the Tom Tom user interface but he's doing a terrible job at making it efficient and hassle-free.
