Alright, on my beginning quest of finding a newer used car since my 01 impala is coming of age and i sense the end is near. So i stopped by the dealership i have my car worked on which sells new and newly used vehicles most cars ranging in high prices a poor college student cant afford... Still in my car driving around the lot a salesman approached my car, not even wanting to get out he started talking and i said what the hell might aswell. First car was a Sabb which was very sporty and all black, (ideal car) i already knew it was waaay out my price range. 2nd car Honda accord coupe, clean around 61k miles but they wanted around the same price as the sabb 20k roughly. The 3rd car 08 altima 60k miles leather int and the works. Seems like a nice car right? Well the seller asked how much was i looking to pay per month, i said 200 a month ( can't even afford that). He walks in talks to his boss, boss walks up to me introduces himself, Talking to the salesman i already mentioned i was only looking today. The salesman asked if i wanted to fill out a "credit check to see where i landed at. I'm only 20 making roughly 14k a year lol, i'm assuming i will need a co signer before i even fill the form out. The salesman comes back and say this is what we can do for you. By now i'm thinking wow! i got approved for a 18k car by myself quite impressive. Now the salesman wants me to sign the paper agreeing i have their business. Already mentioned once i was ONLY looking today, so i made this really bogus excuse i need to talk to my parents first about this deal. The owner came back and offered to give 3k trade in on my car which is only worth $1800 plus cover the taxes which is another $1600. So i'm looking at 15800 for this car. I mentioned that i must talk to my parents first and left the dealership.. I'm scared to get a oil change there again, i just know i will get harassed to buy a car. It's all about business man....

When I was your age, I went to a dealer to look like you. I ended up getting a car that was way out of my price range. So, I think you made the right decision to leave.

It's funny how the salesmen work
I hate going to the dealership just to look, as soon as they see you pull up they are out the door, anything to get a sale

Its the stigma of used car salesmen they are about as sleazy as they come, always trying to bait and switch their way into a sale with false promises.

The best thing to do in situations like that is be direct with your intentions, do not remain courteous because they will not give you the same.

Haha, I love making car salesmen look like fools, especially in front of other potential customers. I'll ask them a few questions about the car I'm looking at, and wait for them to dodge or spew some nonsense, and then I start rattling off all the technical specs, known issues, potential issues, and everything else they have no clue about. Basically I school them on the cars that they're selling, and they are immediately demoralized. I then get to watch in amusement as they squirm and struggle to come up with something to say to try and sell me the car that I already know everything about, on top of my saying that I'm "just looking". LOL Sooooo much fun! :D

And good for you for walking away. NEVER believe what they say. If your're unsure, go home and research! Talk to people that are experienced in car buying, or at least people that work on cars, if not both. A car is most certainly not something you want to buy on impulse, or with little thought going into it. You need to know about any known issues, potential issues, maintanence costs, and immediate costs(does the used car need an oil change right away, new shocks, new tires, was it maintained well, etc?).

He is doing his job..... SELL,
you have to be the concientious consumer and look after your self 'coz no-one else will, least of all the salesman and his boss. If a deal smells too good to be true....it is!
If you make a decision, whether you are coerced or not, you have all the time in the world to examine it and decide if it was the right one, if it is the right one, you'll walk away happy with it from the get go
There are plenty of people that will take your grease and oil change cash, no strings attached. Tell the guys you normally deal with you like your current ride, and you'll change it when YOU are ready.
all the best

I was a car salesman at both nissan, and the largest Mazda dealership and #1 in sales in the nation. And Ill tell you this as a fellow rider. Theres A LOT of markup on used cars, generally 300-500% more then a new car. Him saying that he will give you more on your trade is bogus, he just wants to make you feel that their used car is worth what they are asking, so instead of lovering the price of their car, they give you more for yours, its all a mental thing.

Second, all salesman will try to make a deal same day! Why? Because:
1) Only about 10% if not less people will buy a car from them when they are (be-backs) Buying a car after multiple visits and conversations with the salesman.
2) The salesman will be pressured by the management to do followups and get you through the door again and buy (why buy? because if your back which means that you liked the car, treatment, dealership, or all of them, and now your ready to move on, only thing that might be holding you back is the $$$ which can be worked at)

The follow-up process can be frustrating to both the salesman and you (the potential customer)

Oh ya BTW we approved EVERYONE I've sold couple cars at above 20% APR

Theres much more I can tell you but I'm too lazy right now lol. If you have any questions or need help, just let me know.

PS Happiest custies are the ones who got ripped off the most, and the most dissatisfied ones are those who got the greatest deal in the world. Funny how that works...

I too had a similar experience almost 30 years ago. I stopped at a VW dealership while driving my piece of **** 1963 VW bug not worth $300 at best. The saleman showed me the coolest car on the lot which was a VW Scirocco. After all the bs of the paper with the 4 squares on it, the total payment was to be $389 a month and that was in 1980. I told the guy I wanted to go and talk with my dad about it. He put me on the spot and said and I quote, "real men make their own desicions and do not need to talk the their dad". I hemmed and hawwed and made my way out of there as quick as possible.

Always remember that it is your money and YOU decide where you spend it. No one ever gets your money unless you decide to give it up. You always have the control unless you decide to give it up and the you only have youself to blame for your desision........not a slimebag salesman who is trying to feed his family or drug habit.

My Mom asked me to accompany her on a car buy. The salesman fast-talked, convinced mom, took us to his desk, we made an offer, and he said he'd have to discuss it with his boss, and he left and went upstairs to his boss's office.
Mom started to ask me something, but I shhh'd her. And watched. And noticed the salesman's phone was on speakerphone, and a line button was pushed and blinking.
I punched another line, and turned the speakerphone button off. We both looked upstairs, and immediately saw two heads pop up, looking down on us!
We both laughed and walked out.
I LOVE f*&$ing with car salesmen! :BLAA::BLAA::BLAA:

wow.. i go to a dealer and they dont ever come up to me.. probably cuz i shoot them mean and dirty looks before they even bother...

I had both positive and negative experiences. When my family first came to US, we went to this local (they are fairly big in Fairfield) stealership, and basically got ripped off - the APR was through the roof - something along 20%. But, they made a mistake - they also f*d up the mileage (not a lot, but enough) in the paperwork for a used car, and when one of our local friends saw it, he came back and helped us raise hell. Things got renegotiated.
Fast forward few years, I'm starting to look for a car. I have one single important requirement - manual transmission. I stop by the same location (now it's a different brand (VW), yet still belongs to the same dealer). I tell them i'm just starting to look and want to get a feel how cars drive. I ain't buying a car until i compare it to at least 3 others. So we load into diesel Passat, but automatic. During my drive around the block the salesperson pushed me twice to buy. Then when we got back, his boss came out, and laid down the whole "this is the best time to buy" (it's Spring, i'll wait for Fall to get last year model, thank you very much). And then he assured me that they can definitely find a diesel model with manual. As far as i remember at that time, manual+diesel were not available, at least according to the blog.

Then, i go to Saab dealership and wonder around the showroom for almost 20 minutes before i get noticed (I guess you dont get much attention when you pull up in a 10 y.o. Subie Impreza), but then this little lady comes over and we go for a ride. I'm 6'3, she must be 5'2 at most, but :jawdrop: she drives like a maniac - she's coming into the corners with zero visibility of what's behind doing about 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. Then she makes it into a church parking lot and starts doing 8-s and tight circles. Throughout the whole experience, she NEVER pushed me to buy. When i said, i'm just starting to look and need to compare to other brands, she gave me her card and said that they are getting new delivery soon. Only one thing saddened me - they didn't have the 9-2x's,

Another Saab dealership, no pushing again, and that's where i got my current Saabaru. No pushing at all!

Overall, I understand the pressure to sell, but it looks like there are salespeople who value a relationship and dont push too hard.
