Whats up the name is Thomas.
Im 19 and just bought an 06 Fz6.

I got it with 13 miles on it and now I have close to 1500 miles on it.





Right now the only thing I've done to it is the fender eliminator and flush mounts, which I did today. Well I'm still trying to figure out the best way to do the flush mounts.

Stock front sprocket is 16 teeth... -1 would be a 15 teeth sprocket.

What it does is exactly the same effect as when you're on your bicycle and go to a smaller gear in the front... you have to pedal quicker for any given speed... on the FZ, what it does is move your power band "up" if you wish, or in other words when you are riding at say 50mph in 3rd, you are at 5k rpms (for example, I don`t know what it would actually be) with stock sprocket, with -1 sprocket you`ll be at 50mph in 3rd, but at 7k rpms... which means that you will have more available torque for any given speed, since most of the torque on the FZ is up between 7k and 12k.

Effectively, you`ll just have more torque in any given gear for any given speed. The difference when riding is quite huge (more than any other performance mod you could do imo).

The down side? well, your top speed in each gear will be slightly lower... even though the top speed in 6th will not change, since you couldn`t reach the redline with stock gearing anyway...

the bottom line? it`s the best mod you can do with the money! do it and let me know what you think!

I think these guys may be crazy telling you to get a sproket right off the bat!

Not that it wouldn't a good idea but the bike is new and you've barley ridden it, you cant be used to it enough already to need more torque... or could you?

maybe you're one of those track guys that actually uses all of the stock torque?

But if you wanna do it for the sake of modding then right on!

Plus one on the frame sliders man. I should of got the resin or derlin ones instead of aluminum. I have the derlin ones now.

-1 in the front makes the bike actually much smoother. The stock FZ6 has almost no torque from 0-7k rpms, and suddenly it jumps like a race car... that is dangerous imo. Changing the sprocket won`t make it any more difficult to ride, it`ll just smooth out the power delivery for any given speed.
As a matter of fact, I find myself riding more mellow because I don`t have to downshift to get more torque in high rpms... I can stay in my gear in lower rpms and just get the power I need there.

You`d be surprised by this mod if you tried it

ahh I understand now... I like the idea of a less jerky ride. At first I saw this as a going more torque/speed type of mod, but the way you explained it makes it sound very worth while.

someone also said it was one of the best mods for the money, I wonder how much money time and effort this takes?

I'll do some searching and read up on this. I am really intrested now

P.s. I have never ridden a stock fz6 so I cant compare the torque, but I do have a stock sprocket.

Wavex,does your bike have pc3?
if not,i think you should invest in one because it works really well with -1 front sprocket,,,,,you wrote about the lack of torque between 0-7000 rpm,,pc3 really changes that,,opens the lower rpms up and with the -1 sprocket advice that i took from your signature the bike is accelerating flawless...

Yes, you can use the stock chain but it will need to be adjusted as the OD is smaller with -1. In effect, it doesn't change the torque + or - and it doesn't add or subtract horsepower. What it does is generate more leverage meaning that it makes things easier in terms of roll on and time to distance. As WaveX said, it will also move the respective power band as you are going from 2.87:1 to 3.06:1. The R6 uses 15/48 or -1/+2 to the FZ6 and this works out to be 3.20:1
which really cranks it up.

HavBlue is correct, the torque and HP output of the engine are the same. However, when I talked about torque or HP, I should have been more specific I meant that for any given speed & gear, you will have more torque/HP available from your engine, since you`ll be in higher rpm.

the -1/+2 is what i have along with the PC111 and scorpion cans, it's true the HP stays the same but TQ changes. I don't need to go any faster then 100, so top end is not a big deal BUT..... when you want those HORSES to go it go's and i mean go's. Well that's my 2 cent's.
