What about security. If You fall of the bike, a backpack could prob. have great influence on Your neck?

How likely are you though really to land on your back? Not very, your either going forwards or coming off sideways tbh.

Jansport backpack makes for a fine passenger for my bike, holds extra clothes,water, etc.
I strap it down with it's own bands for the rear and a bungy for the front.
