Smog the FZ6? Geesh.

Very true, one hour of a lawn mower running = the pollution from 40 cars driving for one hour. Per the City of Austin.

I believe CA has in place several restrictions on gas-powered lawn equipment now. Even an outright ban on some types...:eek:

One thing I recently learned was that even the new wood stoves have catalytic converters in them (also a big source of pollution)
 
Yep, I have a CARB-approved lawn mower. It cost $20 more than the 49-state one. Big whoop.

Now, my husband tells me, I just need to mow the stinkin' lawn (he has a broken collarbone exemption). :Flip: When we buy our own place, I'm putting a rock garden in.
 
With the sound traveling to the direction you came from, and the bike moving away, how does that let the people ahead know you are coming toward them???

Get a bright colored jacket and ride paranoid.

Sound travels at around ? MPH. A mile is 5280 feet(1.609344 kilometers). Sound travels at 1096 feet per second. In one minute it travels +- 65,700 feet. In 1 hour +- 3,945,600 feet. That's around 747 MPH.

If I start up my Granma's sewing machine(she has the peddle type and peddles really fast) and I'm headed away from her in any given direction, the sound of Granny's sewing machine travels at 747 MPH. It catches up with me because my car's top speed is below 747 MPH by a few hundred MPH? Now if Granny put that dang needle through her finger again and starts a hollerin, there is an increase in decibels. That is sound pressure or volume. It will be detected by your ear sooner than her feet on that treadle. Not because the sound is now traveling faster but because it overcomes ambient noise by volume.

What I like about science is it enables us to repeat the same experiments and pretty much get the same answers which explains why we can ride around on these contraptions.

I don't find the sound of aftermarket exhausts annoying however I do find the use of a bike annoying in some circumstances. I agree and do wear a bright colored mil spec vest when possible.

Now, If I'm having an out of body experience and there is no physical relationship or relativity to the physical world, am I really 93,000,00 miles from the sun.........?

There is no need for a physics explanation. Start your bike and walk around it in a cricle the sound is reduced as you move towards the front of the bike. I'm sorry your granny's foot makes so much noise but try and place a motorcycle in front of her... aparently it magically reduces sound.

Science is great but when it is only partially applied then false conclusions are made.

I didn't think we were talking about which way the trumpet player was turned. If he blows air through the trumpet verses plays a note through the trumpet there is a difference in decibels. And you're right about science and it's conclusions when involved with misinformation....

Which way should I turn the motorcycle when I place the bike in front of Granny? Regardless, a decibel increase will generally be heard sooner....

I haven't seen the data, but I believe it.

First, observe the cloud of smoke that spews out when you start the mower.

Second, the average mower still has the valves in the block instead of the head, which makes for a really inefficient combustion chamber design, with unburned fuel going out the exhaust. They're low compression engines with fixed ignition timing. There's no O2 sensor to provide feedback on the engine's running condition. They are carburated, and the carbs are built as cheaply as possible, with zero or very few adjustment options to get them tuned better.

The technology of mowers is straight out of the 1950's, and only recently has started to improve.

Compare that to cars, which are now so clean that you can no longer commit suicide by running them in a closed garage.
 
My buddy rides a stock GS 500. He says he can hear me coming up behind him when we ride. Also, he says it is loud as hell when he is behind me. One time, however, I decided to be funny and not shift and cruise at 10k rpms. He said my bike got louder and louder and louder and then all of the sudden he couldn't hear it. He said he could all of the sudden hear his stock bike running even though he was behind me and I was running 10k rpms. It was just cruising so it really wasn't working, so it wasn't that loud. If I wanted to be a jerk I could have goosed it and made a bunch of noise. Point being is that it is how you ride it and respect people during times they could easily be annoyed.

I still have a cat so there should be no difference in the pollution of my bike, other than in certain circumstances, sound. But, my bike is not louder than a big rig or garbage truck, or the school bus that drives through my apartment complex every school day twice a day, especially if I mind my manners during the night hours as to not be rude.

So, I'm not worried about it. Different noise for different boys (or girls).

For most consumer mowers, yes. It's pretty sad actually. But on the bright side most high end consumer and almost all commercial mowers have been fuel injected for awhile and are pretty darn clean, due to the market demand of saving on operating costs for businesses.
