Security precautions?

What do you guys do to secure your bikes? I have to park on the street, so with my old bikes I just used a non-branded bike cover but no actual lock.

I'm debating between a disc brake lock, or just a heavy chain I can leave on a post near my house to lock it to.

I realize a good thief can steal anything, but this is just for deterrent purposes, I have full coverage insurance.

Also, do you guys typically lock your steering?

I always lock my steering column. I also installed a motion/tilt/ignition/ alarm paging system (Scorpio i600). If I'm riding with friends, we will chain our bikes together and I'll set my alarm (with the perimeter sensor on) so my alarm goes off when someone enters the "no zone".

You're right when saying a thief can steal it, but you want to try to make your bike a hard target. The alarm is an easy install too. If you can chain it to something that's a pretty good deterrent as well.

There are many options, just make sure you make your bike more difficult to steal than the next.

I normally just lock the steering lock when I am out and about. I don't have to leave it out at night, but if I did I would find some sort of extra lock. I have had issues with car alarms, so I really don't want one on my bike. I have thought about a disk brake lock, but I'm afraid I would forget that it is there, and damage something when I went to ride away.

When out and about I typically take a disc lock with me - small enough to fit under the seat if needed. When at home I use a heavy duty chain and padlock in conjunction with disc lock. In my mind, any deterrent is better than none, and if it actually makes it harder for my bike to be nicked then its definitely worth it.

If you decide to go for a disc lock then I have two recommendations for you:

1. Buy a lock with a motion sensitive alarm. (XENA Motorcycle Security: disc-lock alarms for motorcycles, scooters and ATVS)

2. Buy one of these: MOTO-DETAIL Motorcycle Lock Reminder Cable. You'd have to be proper daft to forget it with this attached!

I picked up some knowledge myself from these great replies to your post. I just wanted to say that I ALWAYS lock my steering. (It may not stop the thief but it will make them work a little harder. Anything that takes more time and/or creates more noise is a deterrent)
