Riding with a painful big toe (left foot)

I've got an ingrowing toenail and it's gone all septic and gruesome, and painful. Rode the 30 miles to work today which is all twisties and slow/fast bits. Went something like this - upchange OWWWWW upchange OWWWWW upchange OWWWWW. So I started riding pretty much everywhere in 4th. Was quite liberating really keeping the pace up in corners and razzing the nuts out of it on straight bits.

Yah, I've had one of those before. Woke up in so much agony I almost went to the emergency room! I couldn't imagine trying to ride a motorcycle...good idea with staying in 4th gear. You should really get it checked out quick! For me, they just cut out part of the nail, gave me antibiotics, told me to soak it, and keep it cleaned out with peroxide. I wonder if wearing steel toed boots would help in the meantime?

sounds nasty...infections hurt lots!

You need to do routine toenail maintenace and this would never happen.

Nice nurse gave me some penicillin and told me to lance it with a sterile needle in warm water. I did that. OOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Been there, done that!!! My big toe got infected 2 years ago from an ingrown toenail. The doctor first lanced the top of the infected area which I didn't feel at all. When he lanced the side of my toe I about jumped off the table. It hurt like hell, but I was happy to have the infection gone and the nail released from my toe.

The #1 cause of ingrown toenails is improper cutting of nails, and wearing footwear that is too tight.

You have all my sympathy Matt, I suffered for years with ingrowing big toe nails, I had one removed about 6 times and the other one about 7 times . Finally they removed one nail bed (which grew back again, and never gave me problems again.) the other one had a quarter of the nail bed removed so the side of the nail is now a deadly weapon (according to my wife ).

This generally eases the pressure/pain afterwards, although it hurts like hell you should bathe it in washing soda afterwards as this draws the puss out and disinfects the wound.

That's what all the doctors first said, but after numerous trips to the chiropodist, specially made shoes and constant monitoring they had to admit it was something in my DNA or something like that
