Replacing brake ligt with LED light?

Anyone ever just replace the stock brake light bulb with a LED light bulb (not changing the whole housing, just the bulb)? If so what kind of LED bulb did you get and are you happy with it?
 
I did do that. The LED replacement has to be designed with LEDs facing to the sides as well as forward. This because the tail lamp assembly is reliant on the reflector for addition light. It was a direct 1157 bulb replacement. Check these out and keep in mind the assembly will have to fit though the back hole of your tail lamp assembly. :D LED Brake Light, Turn Light and Tail Light Bulbs - Super Bright LEDs
 
I tried this. Motogiro was extremely nice to send me his old bulb actually, thanks again :thumbup: The result was not really what i had in mind and didnt even look similar to the bright led panel look. Go with the actual stuff if u ask me.

Was it brighter than stock? I've looked at those, and brightness is really my only concern. Most of the LED tail/brake light housing replacements I've seen seem to be more for looks than for brightness.

Very true, plus LED does not have a warm up time so it's instant ON/OFF catches more attention when you flash your brake lights.

I did, All it takes is $15.00 and 30 seconds. I have to say that it was not as bright as the stock bulb but, the rotating motion and blinking when braking made a whole difference.

Now I have a set of LED running lights connected to the directional on the front; Also running at 30% of their power all the time, 100% with directional and break on the rear. Several feet of reflective tape on bike, boots, helmet and saddlebags. (no video or pictures yet)

Riding in NYC at night is pretty scary.

:BLAA: I bet it is scary riding in NY traffic!! It's terrorifying to ride with these crazies here in La. we just got voted the worst driver's in America by the Auto Insurance agencies!! LOL :rockon: :rockon:

You just want the highest power SMD bulbs you can find and they have most of the LED's on the side so that the tail light reflector sends that light through the lens just as it does incandescent light. I have never used one of these but there are a lot of reviews online of people who have used them in motorcycle applications with improvement in brightness and intensity over the factory bulb.

Also consider NYC's daylight ends around 4:00pm from November to March. :(


I'm from Mexico City, the driving/riding there is like being on a cage with 20 mutant, hungry, poisonous dogs. You need all your attention and spiderman's sense on 100% every time you step out your home.
Not to mention, you can get kidnapped, robed, shoot, or simply disappear. :BLAA::BLAA:

Check the link, NY is almost as bad as LA but Mexico City is worse then Beiging.......

I used to have a Clear Alternatives clear lens and LED bulb, but it was not very good it was very washed out in the sun with only a little spotlight of red. It was a big led (24 leds) but very directional, facing to the rear. Here is a link to some photos I posted on another forum, trying to improve them

I now kept the stock tailight but added Hyperlights. Those suckers are mega bright!

I bougth this one, 60 smd led, tail light and brake, and is less bright than serie bulb. Its not better than stock bulb.

I still looking for a smd bulb much better than stock...but still I dont find it....
 
I replaced my entire light with the Motodynamics one and it's plenty bright as well as having the attention grabbing 3 flashes when you first apply the brakes.
