Red Key

HI, I'm looking at buying a Yamaha FZ6 on a 2004 model- It does not have a Red Key! Does this matter? As im not sure if the 2004 model have an immobiliser. I have been told that if the immobiliser or the ECU goes wrong i need that key to get it fixed?
Can anyone help?

Mate,you need that key to recode a new key.
If you buy the bike,don't lose the black keys !
Otherwise,new keys,immobilizer,ECU,petrol cap lock,seat lock and lotsa $$$$

right ok thanks- so what happens if there is a problem with the ECU or the immobiliser i assume i need that red key to get it fixed?

have you got any advice for what i should do - should i try get some money off the bike of just go for another bike alltogether?

the simplest solution is to buy another fz6 that you're 100% happy with. :rockon:

Hi Mate, Your 2004 will have the immobiliser as standard.
According to the hand book the red key is vital, should you lose any of the black keys they will need to be recoded against the red key.
The Haynes manual also highlights the importance of the red key. Should you lose the red key it would become very costly to replace the various parts.
If it were me I would negotiate a discount in the price to reflect this.

From the 2004 owner's manual:

This vehicle is equipped with an immobiliser system to help prevent theft by re-registering codes in the standard keys. This system consists of the following:
a code re-registering key (with a red bow)
two standard keys (with a black bow) that can be re-registered with new codes
a transponder (which is installed in the code re-registering key)
an immobiliser unit
the ECU
an immobiliser system indicator light

The key with the red bow is used to register codes in each standard key. Since re-registering is a difficult process, take the vehicle along with all three keys to a Yamaha dealer to have them re-registered. Do not use the key with the red bow for driving. It should only be used for re-registering the standard keys. Always use a standard key for driving

CAUTION:
DO NOT LOSE THE CODE RE-REGISTERING KEY! CONTACT YOUR DEALER IMMEDIATELY IF IT IS LOST! If the code re-registering key is lost, registering new codes in the standard keys is impossible. The standard keys can still be used to start the vehicle, however if code re-registering is required (ie if a new standard key is made or all keys are lost) the entire immobiliser system must be replaced. Therefore it is highly recommended to use either standard key and keep the code re-registering key in a safe place.

• Do not submerge any key in water
• Do not expose any key to excessively high temperatures
• Do not place any key close to magnets (this includes, but not limited to, products such as speakers etc.)
• Do not place heavy items on the key
• Do not grind any key or alter its shape
• Do not disassemble the plastic part of any key
• Do not put two keys of the same immobiliser system on the same key ring
• Keep the standard keys as well as keys of other immobiliser systems away from this vehicle's code re-registering key
• Keep other immobiliser system keys away from the main switch as they may cause signal interference.

Thanks for all your messages - so maybe i wont be getting my FZ6
it will come with 2 black keys but not sure i want to risk 1. loosing them both
2. if the ECU or immobiliser goes wrong i will have to pay for thr replacement of everything.

you are going to let the potential of losing a key stop you from buying a bike?

Dont buy house either, you might lose the keys.

Dont buy a car, you might lose the keys. See where Im going with this?

Get the FZ, you said the seller has the black keys too... tuck one of them away in a special spot, and then go enjoy the bike. :thumbup:

Ok, you guys have me really confused. A red key??? I honestly have no clue what you're talking about. LOL. My '06 came from the dealer with two black keys, one of which had that little silver tag that has the number on it. I didn't receive, nor have I ever heard of a key with a red bow on it.

Hmm...I'm not sure what to think now...lol.

Maybe your dealer has kept it safe for you so they can service it with no problems.
I would go to ask them if they have it. It's safer in your hands than theirs.

If they don't have it you will have problems as mentioned in the above posts. Mine came with the full set of keys, 2 x Black and one Red.

The immobiliser system is for Europe only, our black keys have a chip in them the red key puts the immobiliser into a state to register a new chip (eg a new key)

The chip is checked every time the ignition is turned on to make sure it is recognised before the bike will start.

We had the same thing in this country with the Fiat Punto.
If the car didn't come with the red key,you didn't buy it.
the key was the same with our FZ's,it controlled everything and without it,the car was worthless.

I would ask for a discount to the tune of replacing the ECU and ignition.
