Rear brakes stop working

Hi alls,

I tried to find a threa regarding my problem. Today on my way to work, my rear brakes all of a sudden stop working no matter how much I depress my pedal. Then after I stop using it while riding slowly, it finally worked again. Is it a problem that requires immediate attention or its just overheated brakes?

We need a bit more information. What way were you riding to get brake fade?
How old is the brake fluid?
How old are the pads?

Think the pads are fairly new. About a year plus old. I can't really remember when I last bleed the brake lines man. I have the intention to change my brake lines to steel braided hose but just got no time to do it that's why I didn't bleed them during my last service last month. Please advise!!!

You didn't post it, but did the pedal go all the way down with NO resistance?

Unless you were braking super hard for awhile, it sounds like you have air in the system and needs bleeding.

If there's moisture in the system and you did brake hard for awhile, that would also cause fading issues. A flush/bleed will also solve the problem and doesn't take long to do...

Did you happen to let the rear reservoir run dry and suck air?

IMO, NO brakes are an immediate attention maintainance fix....

Ya. The brake pedal went all the way down. No I have never opened the reservoir before. I may have braked very hard. Would changing my brake hoses to steel braided(any brand to recommend) and bleeding solve my problem?

Have the system bled. Does sound like you may have run the fluid down and pumped air in. If you put new brake pads on and just pushed the pistons back you may have pushed dirty fluid back into the master cylinder. When you replace worn pads it's always better to open the bleeder when you push the piston back to keep dirty fluid from traveling back into the master cylinder reservoir and piston. As others have recommended, bleed the system. If you never done this get help or research "How to bleed brakes" Why not put a new brake line?

Yeah, might as well just to a complete flush of the rear brakes. It doesn't take that long. Fronts too since you'll have everything out and if they haven't been flushed in a while.

Any brake line, SS or stock, with air in the system won't work as noted above. The stock rubber line works ok, with SS lines you'll get a firmer pedal/lever. The stock rubber lines expand some, especially with hard braking. The SS lines very little if any expansion.

As for specific lines, I have HEL lines and am very happy with them. Mine are actually slightly longer than stock in the front as I have bar risers/set backs.

Any NAME BRAND lines should be fine, IMO, please don't buy any cheap a... chinese knock off brake lines...
