Bob lives in a tower block. It is 36 storeys high. There are 3 lifts and they stop at each floor. Bob takes the lift each morning but, no matter which one he gets into, it is three times more likely to be going up than down. Why is this?

Bob lives on the 27th floor. 28th to 36th floor - 9 floors up. 1st to 27th floors - 27 floors down, therefore 3:1 more chance of going up than down !

Can someone run me through this please, as I'm confused. I thought the higher up he was, the less chance it would be going up. So thought he'd be on the 9th floor, not 27th. Couldn't play this round but curious to learn more about the math. Cheers.

I was under the same impression as you. I guess the difference lies in if you are thinking of the direction the elevator is moving when it is arriving or departing. The answer seem to imply the direction as the elevator is arriving at Bob's floor, while I was thinking in what direction the elevator would be departing from Bob's floor. The quiz doesn't say anything about this, so both answers should be accepted, IMHO.

BTW, I did not answer the quiz, so I have no personal interest in this.

Ah that makes sense then. Yes I took it as being the direction it goes once Bob hops in. Thanks for that.

Thanks...
First time c. $ for me.

I didn't know exact answer, but just guessing with 3:1.
And fortunately got correct one.

Thanks for that

I love doing QOTD, but I admit, I don't always have time to work them out myself. It actually takes about an hour per day to run this (when I get home from work)- by the time I research quizzes, answer yesterdays and apply cash/reps to the winners, then start todays thread - takes a lot of time. Then there's dinner etc - sorry, don't mean to complain....

I'm glad you guys are enjoying it - makes it worthwhile :cheer:
