i have been doing some extensive research on what is the best aftermarket filter for my 07 fz6. i have seen many of the posts here on this forum and have been to the links that were posted here on the fourms. i know now never to use a frame filter, as well as a oem yamaha. i also see that many people here on this forum and on other web sites recomend the 14610 pureone automoblie filter, and i was going to do the same after my warrenty was up. HOWEVER I RAN INTO A DIFFERENT FORUM SITE WILE RESEARCHING AND READ ABOUT A GUY CALLING PURORLATOR AND ASKING ABOUT IT THE USE OF THE 14610. HE WAS TOLD NOT TO, THAT THE BYPASS PRESSER IS DIFFERENT AND THAT HE SHOULD USE THE MOTORCYCLE PUREONE FILTER INSTEAD. now that i stated all of that i have some questions maybe you can help me out with. what is the bypass presser of the oem filter? i also went to purorlators web site and looked up what is the right filter for a 07 and it wasent listed, but the R6 takes a ML 16819 up to 05. i have seen it listed here on the fourm that a 16817 works. so what one is it the 16819 or the 16817? thanks for the help again.
 
14610 and 14612
Both have about a 14psi difference bypass. More than a 14psi drop across the filter and it bypasses. It really only matters when the oil is cold, and when the filter is really really really dirty. We dont let our filters get that dirty, and if you have any sense whatsover you dont rap your bike to 13k cold.

It doesnt matter what filter you use for the warrenty. The 14610 or the 14612 or any other filter that fits is fine for that.
The best filtration is only better for your bike.
 
hey wright43, 14 psi on the 14610/12 or is that what the yamaha filter has. so would it be better to have a filter that had a lower bypass or higher. i can see a benifit for both. please correct me if im wrong, a lower would cause the bypass to come on sooner so your filter is no longer filtering but at least the motor is getting full oil presser. higher would mean the bypass dont come on as soon, alowing more oil to be flitered longer but that might allow the oil presser to drop (thats getting to the engine). one more thought, how can you say with such certinty that if your eng was to size up and you had a car filter on there that they wouldnt have a problum with it. unless of course both the car filter and the yamaha filter both have a 14 psi bypass? anyone else, whats your thoughts?
 
I cant answer the bypass question. It doesnt really matter. Its around 14 some I am sure are as low at 10 maybe lower others as high as 20 maybe higher. OIl pressure is not what makes a engine work. Oil pressure is what distributes the oil. The oil itself has a sheer layer that is what allows it to work. It is not going to bypass unless the filter is really really really really really (I mean you have had a huge failure time) clogged. Or the oil is really really really cold and thick and you have used the wrong grade for the temp your trying to operate it in. It just is a nonissue.

I can answer the with certianty question. The moss magnuson act allows us to use aftermarket parts. The manufacturs are not allowed mandate replacement parts. You can use different oil filters, you can use different brands of oil.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637) is a Federal law. It has limitations both for the consumer and the manufacturer. The manufacturer can require the consumer to use specific replacement parts and lubricants however, said manufacturer must supply them at no charge. If the consumer uses other than factory parts and lubricants they can be held liable if those parts and lubricants are found to be sub-standard hence causing failure within the warranty period.

I have used three filters on my bike in the 14,000 miles I have owned it. Yamaha, K&N and WIX. I like the K&N best as it is easiest to deal with but the draw back is they are hard to get. Wix, which is what I am currently using is easy to get and they work fine. I must agree with Wrightme in that I would be far more concerned with the oil I am using and the frequency I am changing it as opposed to the type of oil filter I am using.
 
so what your both saying is that if yamaha dont supply the oil and filter for free then we can use anything that is within reason (specs)? thanks for letting me know about The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637).
 
just wanted to let everyone know some things that i found out. thanks for the link for the pureone filter specs jimcisme! so the 14610 pureone has a 14-18 psi bypass valve. eventhough we all now know that the 14610 should not be able to void a warrenty due to The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (P.L. 93-637), thanks again HavBlue, i still wanted to know about the ML16819 purorlator filter. so today i called purorlator to find out about somre of the specs to do a comparison. the tech support person had no info on the ML16819, but he had the phone number to a purorlator engineer. so i called ang got a hold of him and asked my questions, again even he didnt know due to the filter being made over seas but he said he could find out and email me, and he did. this is what we had to say:

Mr.Graves,

The By-pass setting for this filter is 9-12 psi and the average efficiency for this product category is 82%.

So you see there is a difference in bypass presser between a car filter and a motorcycle filter. i was also told when i called that MOST motorcycle filters bypass is 12-14 psi. so yes you are right wrightme43 it would only matter if the filter was cloged and during coldstarts. i know here in upstate NY that a spring or fall morning is 40f and would need that bypass valve. so having a lower bypass valve would be prefered. however look at the difference in filtering specs the pureone has 98% and the ML16819 has only 82%. im with you guys i think im using a pureone based on the fact that i dont have to drive my bike in 40F (i have a car too), and the pureone is just a better filtering filter all around, and it dont void my warrenty. also just so you all know not all automobile filters have a bypass valve! i am a auto mechanic and yesterday i had some time so i cut apart different filters just to see and was amazed that some really dont have a bypass valve. this of course made have to see if the pureone 14610 has one or not because you cant just belive everything you read, you need to verify. this purorlator pureone does, and it is the better desigen with no plastic parts. i have a good pic of the filter i cut open, better than the pics ive seen on the other sites, but i dont have a link for the pic, so let me know if you would like to see it ill email it to you. this has been fun finding out for sure what filter is better and hope it helps some of you make a choice on using a car filter or a motorcycle filter. :Sport:
 
I like the K&N filter with the chrome finish and hex-bolt top.
 
I have to say I am a bit disappointed in that the by-pass pressure isn't the issue I would be looking for. Rather, I would be very interested in the filters ability to stop dirt or contaminants below 30 microns. Now that's worth talking about. I generally don't allow the oil to get dirty as I change it every 1,500 or so miles on the FZ6. I allow the Harley to go 2,000 or so but that is a bit more involved as I have to change the primary oil too on that one.
 
Here is the magic trick. Use a synthetic oil that flows very easy when its cold, and the cold start problem is solved as well.
I use Mobile One. Its like pouring milk when its cold.

I couldn't agree more. I have used Mobil 1 15W50 since the FZ6 had roughly 300 miles on it. Cold or hot, that rev machine loves it. It is also the one oil I have used in everything but our 2 strokes. It's so nice when you can use one oil in everything......
 
a note on the pureone pl14610- i bought a few online, and though the photos show it to be a blue color, its been modified to a deep gold color, like the inside of a butternut squash, and better yet (as if that color choice is not good enough already!) they are now fully covered in a sand paper finish, a brilliant idea really.

of course the idea when changing a filter is not to make a mess in the first place, but you know your hands are always oily and this should make removal, and tightening it that final wee bit all the more easy.

just beware if you think the filters are still made in "yamaha blue"
 
I bought 2 last week from Pep Boys, and thye were both blue. I'm guessing it's a matter of time ntil they receive the ugly gold ones!:o
 
i like the k and n filter as well, and for that reason. the end has the same size nut on the end of it as the oil plug, and how simple can that be?

however, im anxious to try out the new pureone, with the sandpaper finish. thats got to be a snap to get on and off, when your hands are oily. which they always are, even if you are careful.

butternut orange color!!
