Powerlet + Battery Tender

I did a little searching on this and just want to verify my results. My bike has a Powerlet plug and I can use this with a battery tender (among other things), but I will need a special adapter with any battery tender that I buy. Is that correct or do some come with the adapter built in? What Battery Tender are we recommending these days?

I have an "Oxford" battery tender. It comes with a wired in plug option direct to the battery or removable crocodile type clips that you can stick on the terminals.
I use the wired in option for my bike and the clips for the wifes car.

tbh unless you leave your bike for long periods of time, or have any high powered accessories that drain the battery (especially an alarm), then you probably don't need one.

sometimes people use them to mask charging problems

Your talking about the plug in the attached photo right? I believe has an inline fuse, I forget what size. I think this cable came stock on 07-09 models. If that is what your talking about then yes you can totally use it for a battery tender or other things. I will not comment on tenders since i do not use them personally. My GF uses this for her boat Battery Tender Plus and she loves it to get it ready for the summer and in between trips. No, that plug was not standard on any FZ6. Someone added that plug, it's straight from the Battery Tender package. I've traded several bikes that had batteries in hard to get to places (FJR and FZ6) and rather than remove the harness it was easier just to leave it and buy a new one for the next bike. Looks like the original owner did the same here. I would not own a bike without using a Battery Tender, the batteries are marginal and lf left to sit for any length of time will cause problems eventually. But use a BT and you will extend the life of your battery, often by years.

huh I bought my 09 brand new from the dealer and the bike had it on their sitting in the showroom floor

Then the dealer added it as a courtesy, possibly because they had already installed the battery and they needed a way to keep it topped up while waiting to be sold. I bought a brand new '09 as well and it didn't have it. I've never seen a bike that had these plugs standard from the manufacturer.

sweet guess i got lucky and they left the cable there. One less cable to worry about

Yes very similar, Mine is run under the tank and I connected just by the left fork stanchion.
I have an alarm on my bike and the battery goes flat in about 10 days in fine weather and 5 days in the winter.

Personally I don't have any charging issues because I use the tender. Its a bit catch 22 init. Definitely happy I brought one though.
Bike is still on original battery from 2006.

Ok - so I grabbed a Powerlet cord adapter and now just need to pick out a battery tender - any suggestions on brand?

The battery tender brand is great and I have one. I have had no problems with it and keep my FZ6 charged up diring the winter months with it. :thumbup:
