power commander with stock exhaust and intake

Seems as though people install a PC to take advantage of improved intake and exhaust flow. Does anyone here run a PC with the stock setup, and if so have you found it to be useful? Did you set it and forget it, or do you find yourself changing tunings occasionally?

Some people benefit from just the "Zero" map which can smooth out snatchiness in the throttle but the real benefit is when the bike is tuned by a reputable tuner. A dyno tune is going to cost generally in the $300 range. Tuning a bike is not guess work. You can experiment but....for the price of a power commander you probably want it to give you results across the power band of the engine.

I went with a Power Commander Fuel Controller, (PCFC) and it works great with stock exhaust. More power everywhere and better throttle response.

I wonder. Is there anything else apart from the zero map? I have an 06 completely stock FZ6 Fazer. I also have the super twitchy throttle that is annoying me. Would be great to get a map that cures this for a stock bike.
PS - I will be getting a decat pipe and a set of Scorpion exhausts. (but have to put moneyzz aside for that kind of fun) . Thanks all in advance!

The Dynojet site lists the Zero map as well as "completely stock bike" maps for various models. I haven't installed the software on my old windows PC yet to see what the differences are. I also haven't installed my PC, pipes, or decat yet. I will be doing some experimentation in the near future, I'll post results.

Throttle twitchiness does get better with time. I don't notice it anymore. I did install a G2 throttle tamer though, so the combination of that and practice has resolved the problem for me. The throttle tamer gives a logarithmic cable pull pull rather than linear, resulting in a more gradual initial throttle opening (my description of how I believe it to work, I could be off).

Thanks a lot! And I will update this thread once I install the PC as well. I had a good few bikes by now and the Fazer has the worst throttle twitch from all. (ZX6R, R1, R1200GS, ER6F). I never heard of the G2 throttle tamer I am going to look that stuff up. Sounds like a descent mod to gain more control of the throttle better especially when most needed.

Agree, the FZ6 does not have a smooth throttle out of the box. I am surprised to hear that condition persisted into the later FZ, MT, and FJ bikes. I think Yamaha have sorted it out by now though. It is a curious problem to have since it isn't like Yamaha couldn't produce a smooth Fuel Injection system, they just didn't for some reason. I wonder if they didn't do it on purpose. In the world of guitar amplifiers, there are amps that are known for being super loud. As often as not, the amps themselves are not louder than any other, but the main volume potentiometer is very touchy. You turn the amp up to 2 out of 10, and it is already ear splitting loud, leading one to believe that 10 must be REALLY loud. I suppose an abrupt throttle response could give one the impression that the bike is overpowered, and it is in fact you who needs to learn to control it.

I installed a throttle tamer last winter, and it took a big bite out of the throttle abruptness. There are various cams available to change the behavior, and I can say that with the years I have with the FZ, It makes things better. There is still no substitute to gaining experience with the twitchy throttle, but that and the tamer is a really good combo.

As Jackie Stewart use to say (he was talking about driving, but the concept applies) touch all controls as if they are made of egg shells, You will be smoother on the controls, and thereby faster. Don't confuse "smooth" with "slow" - they are not the same. Slow on the controls will make you an awkward rider.

I've never found the FZ's throttle or clutch to be sensitive - but I've been following Jackie Stewart's advice since the 1970's.

I too am a fan of the wee Scot. I'll bet you read his last book, 'Winning is not enough' , but if you have not, do it. Fantastic.

You mention his advice. I think it was a Car and Driver interview many years ago when he was working for Ford. I recall him talking about his testing of the Taurus, where he spoke to the need for a vehicle to instill confidence in the driver. Once that is achieved, new levels of performance present themselves.

A great, but long, book. Like many with learning disabilities (dyslexia), he is a great teacher because he had break the steps of learning down into it essential steps. I think you may be right on the Car-and-Driver article - maybe around '86-'87.
