Oz's Question of the day #76(21/8/09)

[OZXJR]

On a nice sunny day, a man rowed his boat to an island in the middle of a big lake.
On the island he caught some fish.
He looks at the sky and sees some very dark clouds coming ,so he decides to row back to the shore of the lake .
After 10 minutes of rowing he looks behind him and to his surprise there is no island anymore.

What happend to the island?

But honestly, I'm a bit stumped. I have an idea but it is a little weak..

Answer:The island is still there,when you row a boat you are sitting backwards.He looked behind him,which is away from the island.

That was my second thought, but I couldn't imagine how he would be surprised to not see it if he had been staring at it as he rowed away.

(First thought was he was in a specific lake that was famous for a rapid rise in water line during a distant storm. But I couldn't name the lake so I dismissed that.)
