Opinion on engine tick?

Hello guys, I'm new here. I have a red 2007 Yamaha Fz6. I was just curious about the engine tick my bike has started making. Currently at 27k miles. Oil is clean and not noticing any loss of power. Doesn't run any white smoke and haven't noticed any performance loss and hasn't been running warm. (170 degrees f on highway. 180-190 slow in traffic)

Do you guys think valves need adjusted? Or normal yamaha tick? Rode it about 350 miles two days ago and had no issues.

I've attached a video for reference. In video it is around 130 degrees f operating temp

Welcome to the forum. The ticking is likely the cam chain. It’s hard to tell from the video if it’s in the normal range, but the FZ6 does make some racket. You are due for a valve adjustment and the CCT is checked during that service.

Changed my cam chain tensioner today! (Decided to do it myself because the local yamaha shop quoted me $485 for them to do it) and it fixed the loud tick I had!

Was it similar to this tick i have now? I just bought a used 2006 fz6 with 57000 km on it and have been hearing this clicking/ticking sound. Kinda scares me a bit too since this is my only and first vehicle. Any insight or help would be lovely. Thank you

That sounds like the Yamatick.

The best way to check is to use the old mechanics trick of getting a long screwdriver and putting the tip against the right hand side of the engine, just above the timing chain cover.

Put your ear against the handle and move the tip around until the noise is loudest, that's where it's coming from.

BTW your idle sounds a bit low. Switch on the ignition and press the Select button until you see E:0

Start the engine and let it warm up, it should show a figure between 1250 and 1350 rpm.

If it's lower than that, look under the left side of the fuel tank, in the gap between it and the frame and you'll see a phillips head screw with a ridged edge.

Use a screwdriver to adjust it until the idle is in the correct range.

If it won't settle between those numbers, it would be beneficial to balance the throttle bodies.

Aw thank you so much for such a detailed response. I’m legit super new to this so please forgive the stupid questions from my end. I am going to have to figure out where the timing chain cover is first. I will get back as soon as i have it. I am going to have to figure out where the timing chain cover is first. I will get back as soon as i have it.

Just below your your right knee there's a cover which has a circular section (about 3 cm in diameter from memory) with a slot in the middle. That cover is the timing chain cover.

The cam chain tensioner is to its top left.

If you search online for the Yamaha Service Manual (or the Haynes Manual) you should be able to find all the details.

Regarding the idle, do you mean it should be between 1250 and 1350 from the factory and its somehow lower than that?

Yes, that's correct.

so i had a long ride today and that left me with more questions regarding the bike.
for the first time i felt insanely crazy vibration today above 6000k rpm mostly on my right footpeg. (felt no such thing in the morning when i drove to work from my girlfriends's about 125 kms and after work i rode to friend about 250kms away, i didnt notice the right buzzing like hell while going to work) i mean since its a new machine for me altogether, i listen to sound changes as well as how the thing feels pretty keenly. now, i cant rule out the fact that maybe i am actively looking out for things when there arent any because its a used/high mileage bike and also i was pretty exhausted and sore, but i dont know something felt a little off. i also think my rear tire may have a leak, but its about 22:35 here so i will get that checked out tomorrow. I did go through the forums and found something about cylinders not being in sync as well as the issues with CCT spring. Or do you think its the imbalance in throttle bodies as you mentioned before? I am atleast gonna go out to a gas station right now and check the tire pressure again. will update you soon. would you be kind enough to shed some light onto this, if you're aware of something like this yourself?

The FZ6 is based on the R6 which is a racing design, so it's meant to be revved to get the best power from it, however that does make it "buzzy" too, so that may be what you're feeling.

If the throttles haven't been balanced recently (or at all) that may contribute to this.

Also, have you checked the chain tension? It should be between 45-55mm when on the side stand, but a quick and dirty way to check is to put your finger on the chain just behind the centre stand and try to push the chain against the swing arm.

If it goes easily, or you can't get it there at all, it's too loose/ tight. You should be able to get it to touch, but only if you keep it pressed there.
