I dropped my Nolan 90 helmet on hard concrete today. Less than a year old! Man I am pissed. So long helmet...to the pasture you go. I have a backup Joe Rocket helmet, so I'm not too down and out.

send it out in a blaze of glory ? i've never seen anyone destroy a helmet that they've dropped, i wonder if anyone actually trashes them ?

i've dropped 3 of mine. still ride with them. of course, it's not from 20 feet either.

That sucks... I personally am not one that buys into a helmet being ruined by a drop however. If it is damaged from a 4 foot empty drop to concrete how is it going to protect me in a weighted drop and slide on pavement. To each his own but just some food for thought. I you are just bothered by the scratches and appearance well then thats different and I totally understand.

I just dropped mine for the third time last week on Geoff's garage floor and put another nice scratch in it... starting to look like a battle helmet. :tard:

I talked to a Shoei rep once, and he said you can drop it and the helmet is perfectly fine as long as no spider cracks or stress marks show up. That might be shoei only though, because it was designed to spread out the impact with little force. :don'tknow:

It's not that the drop ruins a helmet necessarily, but it can deform the foam between the inner and outer shell which would have normally absorbed the impact of an accident. Generally, you can send in your helmet for inspection by the manufacturer to determine if it needs to be replaced or not.

I agree the internal foam makes up the integrity along with the shell but I'm also thinking if the shell is good it probably wouldn't have flexed enough to damage the internal foam unless your head was in it.
Hard call because your head is worth the caution even though expensive.

Saw this cool video on MC safety equipment and they showed this test where they fired a metal rod into a helmet shell and it penetrated the shell. Then the same thing with the foam liner and it when through. Then they put the liner and shell together integrally and the piston wouldn't go through. Then there's the most important test. You in the helmet. I've done that one and to give an Idea of impact at speed. I had mild burns from the foam interior. The first impact jerked the helmet enough that I got these little burns on the side of my face!

I can't believe someone would ride with out a lid!!

I would do that in this case as opposed to discarding it immediately. A crash...that's a different situation.

It landed on a point where the helmet tapers to the back. Right smack on it...there are stress marks and the screen is scratched when it rolled over to a stop. I'm not going to risk it.

We had a kid on the forum a couple of years ago who did just that. I was unimpressed though, would have liked to see more carnage...

That sucks! Sounds like you're using it as a nice excuse to get a new lid though, so not all that bad. Time to bust out the shotgun!

Unless you can pay to get the cracks x-rayed, it's toast

Even if you send it to the manufacturer for checking, how do you know it's not damaged by them or during transport?

Buy a new one

I used to think that you needed a new helmet everytime it was dropped too , until I saw Mika Kallio highside the Ducati back in 2009 smack his head on the track get up & jogs back to the pits. It was then I questioned the dropping it from 2 foot wrecking it theory because they showed him running down the pits & straight onto his spare bike to finish qualifiing with NO helmet change :thumbup:

Was your head in it? If all it did was fall off your seat, it’s fine. The expanded polystyrene liner is designed to crush between the hard ground and your head. As long as your head isn’t inside the helmet, no crush. Check the shell for any visible cracks. Stick one hand inside the helmet and with the other hand, squeeze the shell over the impact point and check for any softness or give at all. Tap over the surface of the helmet and compare the sound over the impact point.

Think about this.... If it is ruined by dropping it from say waist high , it isnt going to help you one little bit if you go down at 80kph is it :don'tknow: Thats just my thinking

I'm with the crew that fails to see how a 5 lb helmet that is designed to protect your brains from a 100mph bouncing skid down concrete can be damaged enough to render it unsuitable by a mere 4' drop.

+1 ive dropped my helmets before and still use both of them... there was nothing wrong but a few scratches... although if your using it as leeway to get you a new one then by all means keep it as a back up and just buy the new lid you are wanting...
