Nice and clean, but hey - what's this????

Hi

Just jetwashed the bike after long ride in grimy conditions yesterday. Don't worry, I avoided the electricals and sensitive bits. So bike's nice and clean. Trouble is theres a panel on the RHS that's long been bubbling and the jetwash took the outer layer of stuff off revealing corrosion underneath. Does anyone know what is under this and if I can order a new part and put it on myself?

ouch.. are you ridding with some serious salt?? i would think taht would be replaced easily, but im not 100% on that. if its not peeling off, is it a big deal, or you just dont want it to get worse???

That part is plastic. It can`t be corrosion.

Looking at the 1st picture, there is corrosion present on the front of the motor and the top of the #4 header. You may want to lift your fuel tank to see if the battery is leaking. It's getting acid damage from somewhere, and it doesn't show up in the picture of the left side of the bike.

Its just the paint blistering up.

The paint on those platic parts right there is pretty thin. I painted the cap inside that case black last summer. And when I did some light sanding to it, it just flaked off. You can remove the cap, with oil in the motor and nothing should leak. As for the cover I am not sure.

Just remove that cap and check for oil. If it doesnt appear that alot of oil is sitting in there. Go ahead and pull it off. You should be able to purchase some OEM silver paint from your local yamaha dealership.

It's the oil pump cover, so be careful for oil.
A new one is $37 from ronayers btw.

Just give it a tap with my ring (wedding). This cover is definately metal rather than plastic

Yup the oil pump and cam chain are behind the cover. The plug can be removed so you can put a socket on the crankshaft to turn it. Should not be too much oil behind there as most of it should be in the sump/pan.

it's called engine crank case cover, you need to order a new crank case cover along with the gasket. When my bike went down that whole piece was scuffed and i Had to replace along with the gasket. When you take it off there will be a rubber piece holding a small hose, BE VERY GENTLE. There are a couple of screws that holds the rubber piece in place, so when you take it off pay close attention where things go. I will go in my garage and see if i have the part numbers for you. You can also go to Yamaha's web-site and somewhere on the site they have a complete bike part brake down with all part numbers, I did this by myself and I AM NO MECHANIC (LOL).

ok here is a picture of the part both inside and out along with the gasket and the part #1B3-15416-00-00 it's called oil pump cover, i'm am not sure of the gasket part number but i think it's CW KIT not sure. Hope this helps.
