New Speedo/Tach and old mileage?

How does that work? If I purchase a used Speedo/Tach (2007 FZ6) am I restricted to the mileage of the bike the speedo/tach are off of or will it remember what the mileage is from the old bike from the onboard computer?

odo. readings are saved in the speedo. so switch speedo, switch mileage

Starts over at 0. You'll just have to write down somewhere what your original mileage is, and then add it on.

really? that kinda sucks..i always thought that would be saved in the main computer..so is there no way to retrieve your old mileage if your old speedo is destroyed?
what part of the speedo saves this info?
