Hello, this is my first streeb bike and noises, heat and RPMs are new for me. If you have some experience you may know the answers to:
- My 2006 FZ6 generates a lot of heat in my right ancle when riding. Is ti normal? can you put something tho block the heat aou of my ancle?
- I'm in the break in period, but sometimes 7K rpm seems to be a lot for the engine, is it normal, does it supose to be loud?
- what are the "ok" rpm when you are in a highway, 7,8 or 10K rpm?

Thank you for sharing your experience I come from the off-road world this is new for me and I do not want to break this beauty.

Many of the other riders here are much more experienced than me and will probably give you more intelligent answer, but here's my 2-cents:

1. You legs are right next to an exposed engine. Heat is normal. It won't be enough to hurt you at all, unless you're putting your ankle actually against the engine.

2. Various opinions about how hard to ride the engine during break-in. I took it easy on the engine. At 7K, it's going to start getting loud... you're getting towards where the power of the engine really starts to kick in.

3. Redline for the FZ is around 14,000... 10K isn't going to faze it. On the Interstate, I'll be in 6th gear cruising up around 80 mph purring away somewhere around 7K (best guess). Off the Interstate, I often run it over 7K, sometimes keeping it around 10K, no problem. Usually, I like it at a lower, rpm for a smooth, quiet, comfy ride. Have it higher when I'm having to deal with traffic or feel like getting on the throttle some.

Be careful, and enjoy!

- Heat: Are you wearing shorts? I've never noticed heat on my legs except for the rare occasion when I'm in shorts... maybe somebody else has a different experience.

- Break-in: 7k rpms is fine during the break-in period. You can even go into the higher rpms safely. Main thing to consider is that you don't want to stay in the high rpms for prolonged periods of time during the break-in.

- RPMS: This bike likes high rpms. 5-7k is normal if you're just cruising. 9k+ is normal if you're having some fun.

the cat is on the rightside of the bike, that may explain the extra heat on that side. I run at 10k on the tach all day long, it won't "faze" it (pun intended) I'm not sure what you mean "loud". are you talking intake or exhaust noise or something else?

welcome aboard!!!:D

I notice a lot of heat from the engine too, but I just chalk that up as part of sitting on an engine. Sometimes it seems worse than others, but I think that has to do with the wind.

Just hit 400 miles on my '08. I haven't noticed heat specifically at my ankle, occasionally when I slow down I notice some general heat around my legs on both sides. I was keeping it under 6k for the most part for the first 300 miles. Yesterday I was varying it between 5.5 and 7 with a couple trips up to 9 or 10 just to see how it feels. I was on some back roads mostly so was keeping it around 55 - 60 and just kept it in 3rd and 4th gear to keep the RPMs up. I've manged to average 80 miles per day since I got the bike on Saturday so I'm hoping to get the 500 mile service done next Saturday if the shop will do it.

1) I have never felt any heat. I always wear full protective gear and waterproof boots with kevlar on the front side. What were you wearing?

2) During the first 600 miles, I never went higher than 6000 rpm. Between 600 and 1000 miles, I tried to stay below 7000, but revved it up to 8000 shortly and occasionally when the engine was warm (after I had been riding for at least half an hour).

The engine might be a little louder than usual if you rev it before it's nice and warm. Don't start pushing your engine under 80°C ( = 175° F)

The main thing during the break-in period, is to never run too long with the same rpm!! Accelerate and decelerate all the time, don't cruise at 5000 rpm for half an hour, that's the worst you could do.

3) For my bike 105 mph (=170 km/u) is at 9000 rpm. There is no such thing as "ok" rpm. You can drive 60 mph in any gear on the FZ6 !! Just depends on how much power you need to react quickly to other traffic. When there's not too much traffic, and I need to travel a long distance on the highway, I put her in 6th gear, mainly for fuel-economy reasons. Just use the gear that feels "right" at the time.

Dude, are you riding in flip flops? I've run up towards 300 miles in a day and have not experienced heat above what's normal for any motorcycle. Check online to find out what's the proper gear to wear while riding. Remember that sweat washes off, road rash does not! You can't hurt this bike by running the revs up to 12,000RPM. It LOVES it! But take your time getting used to it and you'll be just fine. GRUMPY

I only feel heat on the edge of the seat where the heat is rising. I don't feel it around my feet. 90% of the time I'm wearing textile trousers and my SIDI boots and the other 10% it's boots and jeans.

perhaps you are over analyzing stuff on your bike. Some heat, if you feel any, is normal.

When i ride mine on the highway, i am cruising at around 7k with no problems. when i was in the breakin period, i stayed around the 5-6k range.

:welcome: and good luck.

You're totaly fine. I was paranoid about about every sound, smell and feeling during the 1st 500-1000 miles on my Fizzer.

With that said, if your ankle is hot, then I'm ASSUMING you aren't wearing protective gear. If you are wearing boots and proper pants and yer ankle is still hot, then your bike might be on fire....

Hello,
Congrats on your new bike ;)

- Yes some heat will be normal, as long as it doesnt over heat i wouldnt worry about it. Also i've been told it is the CAT pipe that heats up alot near the feet, and aftermarket exhaust with a CAT Elim pipe will cool it down (so i'm told) I have a CAT Elim pipe, didnt notice really, heat was never a big deal, we do have a 600cc engine in between our legs, so expect some heat!

-7k during break in is very good! I know what you mean about it making noise and not being sure if its good or bad, at first i always wanted to ride it around 4-5k rpm, but you are not hurting the bike. During break in i did alot of going through all the gears, varying my speed...

-Any RPM is okay as long as its not in the redline :p. On the freeway i usually go to 6th gear and cruise. If i go in the twisties i'll be in 2nd or 3rd so it'll rev up to 10k easy but thats the point, in order to have engine braking power...

Hope that helps ^_^

the only heat I ever feel is when the radiator fan blows on me at a stop.

I think everyone is asking the same thing - what kinda pants (if any :squid:) are you wearing?
