Your buddy was right on the carbs, but only partially so. You can pull the carbs apart, and it does disturb the sync position of all but the "main" throttle body. And doing a visual bench sync will get you in the ballpark, then you just use a carb sync tool to get them perfect.

Really you should pick one up anyway. Carbs should be synced more often than FI engines. Some as often as every oil change. And generally, if you add an aftermarket exhaust, it'll just run a bit lean. So getting a Stage I jet kit and installing it will usually cover it. Basically a change from .125mm to .140mm (for example) on the main jet allows enough fuel for the exhaust. It covered the Yoshimura exhaust on my '99 Katana.
