Looking at an 04 FZ6 with 400 miles

Hi everyone,

First post and first bike. My good buddy is selling his 04 FZ6 with just 400 miles on it. The bike has been sitting for a few years, so I'm guessing it would be wise to take it into the dealer for a checkup? What should I have them look at? Also, it has a half tank of fuel, is it ok to start it up with that old fuel in there? It has been in a heated garage.

If it has been a couple of years, then I would say no dump the tank... and check the airbox make sure no pesty rodents have found their way in there and also check the exhaust...... as far as being fuel injected you should be okay otherwise...

Plain and simple, ask him if he has had it covered (both over a roof and under a cover) and if he was periodically starting up the bike and letting it warm up for the battery to get charged and the internals.

If the answer is yes, definitely take a look into it. If you dont know too much about bikes, bring a friend who does. Look over it and have him start it up for you and have yourself (if you are skilled enough too) or your friend a 2 mile test ride. Make sure the tire pressure is up for sitting tires loose air easily.

After that you should know what to do

Just starting it up and letting it idle will NOT charge the battery.

On an 04, plan to replace the battery, and get new tires, at the very least.

How does somebody only put 400 miles on a bike in 5 years? Wild.

bought it without really wanting it right... yea,, and dont forget to check the tires for flat spots and dry rot... good luck with your purchase

my housemate Bates121 just got an '04. It sat kind of like that. We changed all the fluid...ditch the fuel and put in 91 for two tanks and run through it quick to blow out any crap buildup.

bleed your brakes.

new tires (the others may be rotted and too old)

radiator flush? maybe...consult manual

check for rust and deterioration and any scratches indicating a drop

Double check all bolts.

clean chain and relube

lube cables

check hoses for cracking

wash/wax

RIDE IT FOR HOURS AND HOURS...he put 600 miles in week 1...not bad for a n00b!

If you like it and it's good, use the fact that it has been sitting for so long to get money off the price.

Other than that, what everyone else said +1.

I agree with some of the other members. Those Tires must go! They may appear to look fine, but over time, tires, especially motorcycle tires will go bad. You won't get the necessary traction that you need to ride, especially during turns. It's not like a car where you have four of them. It's not worth the risk.

Unfortunatley, this will set you back about $2-$300 for a new set. Make sure you check out the tire tech forum for some great reviews.

Oh, welcome by the way. And like some other member mentioned, it's impossible for someone to have a 2004 bike with only 400 miles. So prove me wrong and show us some pics!:needpics:

It's my best friend, but I'll take some pics just to prove to you guys lol. Basically, he bought it, the bike is a little too tall for him..dropped it in his driveway the first day, dropped it at a red light the next and never touched it again.
