LED Lighting Idea. I would like your opinions.

I want to get this split into half Red pods and Half Orange pods.

Wire it up so that the whole back half of the bike becomes a brake light at night, and the front left and right becomes a turn signal at night. Otherwise the LED lights would remain unlit.

I dont see that it could violate any aux. lighting laws as the colors are DOT mandated and they would only be supplimentry to the DOT mandated signals that remain on the bike.

What do you think?
 
I say go for it, thats basically what ive done with mine, i have the back half of my bike all lit up with the red leds and have yet to be messed with by the local LEO's. I cant see were it would be an issue i see Goldwings, Victory, and other larger bikes all lit up like Christmas trees rolling down the road and i dont see them being hassled with.
 
I think that it is a great idea - just make sure that the auxillary lighting isn't so overpowering that as a motorist you would't be able to see the rear brake light activated when you slow down.
 
It would only come on as a brake light, the brake light will light and the whole back of the bike will glow red from inside, lighting the undertail area, tire, swing arm, and the whole area up to the rearsets.
 
If you could do it tastefully, go for it. By this I mean no hanging wires and loose or zip tied connections.

If you had one of those LED strips mounted on the back side of your licence plate, facing forward to light up the tail section, that would be neat.

I think you mentioned this, but something on the inside of the frame above the swing arm, if there is clearence, some amber bulbs to act as turn signals.

Great visibility option. Good call.

Yes I can do it right, I went thru submarine electronics rate training, and worked for several years on RVs, tow vehicles, big rigs and trailers. Not a problem in the world.
 
I like it :) Pics! of course if you do go through with it :) I had toyed with a similar idea, but talked myself out of it. I had mulled around more of a downward facing set up where instead of illuminating the bike it threw a pool of light out and back of the bike somewhat when the brakes were applied. If that makes any sense whatsoever. I hadn't thought of working them into the signals. I like it :thumbup:
 
Well if the seller wont split up the 4 pod and 4 bar package into half and half red and orange do you wanna go in on a set of each and then both end up with 2 red 4 led pods 2 red 5 led bars and 2 orange 4 led pods and 2 orange 5 led bars?

I didn't mean to insult you Steve. Sorry if I did.

How many stips come in that kit? Could you do some stuff up front as well like behind the radiator to get some light on the side of the bike?

I'll take some pics of mine here in a little bit to show how clean of job this can be, for the most part you cant even see the lights themselves until there lit up.

Oh noes man I didnt think you were being insulting at all. I was just giving a hard time man. I forget alot that you cant see me laughing my butt off when you read my post. Generally just assume that I am joking around and having fun man.

Ok here ya go guys, man that took a lil bit to get them all shot and resized but should give ya a good idea as to how clean a project this can be if you take your time and do a good job of hiding the wires, i recorded a lil vid to

I think it will look awesome. I might try to wire some up with the pile of leds I have laying around. If your handy with a soldering iron and some simple (even for a Navy boy from kentucky, j/k dont hunt me down and kill me :thumbup:) calculations I am willing to send you a handful of leds. Just solder as many as you want together, wire in the appropriate resistor and maybe some clear shrink wrap. Presto, instant led lights.

I'll check the closet of many toys and see what I have. Maybe even get crazy and find an online calculator to figure out the resistance needed.

*edit* meh, cant find my electronics stuff. Not sure if I lent them out or what but I did find this:

About $16 for the same number of leds in any combination of red and yellow. No resistor needed on the 12 volt leds. At this point you would have an easier time getting the kit but if he does not want to split the colors it could be an option.

Hey thanks. I used to build moonlights with the blue/uv blue led lights for reeftanks. Corals glow under UV light so people loved them.

I willl check those out for sure.

I like it, i think it looks great....have seen a few bikes with it done, and i think it looks great on a bike that is well maintained.
