Junior Design Project

I have been racking my brain all evening on this project and I had to take a break. So I figured I would share with you all what we (team 4) have been working on so far.

To start:
Everyone who goes through mechanical engineering here at UNCC has to take Junior Design when eligable. The only thing you do in this class is build a robot from scratch with your team mates. However, everything you do has to have calculations and proof supporting why it works the way it does.

Every year the goal for robot changes, all the groups have to complete the same task (11 groups or so, 2 classes). This years task is to deploy a bridge.

We have to build a bridge and robot to deploy it over a gap that is 9 inches across. To get to the gap we have to get the robot to go over various objects (blocks of wood) then climb a 30 degree incline that is roughly 2 feet high. Once we get to the gap, we have to deploy the bridge, cross it, pick it back up and continue around the rest of the course, then come back to the gap, deploy the bridge, cross it, pick it back up and then go back down the incline to the start point.

Our budget is 170.00 down from 200.00 last year. Reason-everyone is in an economical crunch, so we have to learn to adjust as well. The robots task is also timed, so the quickest wins. In addition to the time trial there are design constraints that we will be judged on as well.

There are 6 of us on a team, of which 2 of the other guys I study with everyday. Ed and Omar and I have all had Advanced Cad-Cam with Dr. Raquet who is one of the judges as well. The three of us did some rather difficult projects for that Cad-Cam class and actually showed the prof. some new tricks with Pro E. When he found out who was in our group he pulled one of the members, Ed, aside to inform him that with the three of us in a group they (the other professors/judges) are expecting alot from us....

We have ideas all over the place at this point, and working on some modeling now. We have 15 weeks, 13 now to complete this. In addition we have various sub system trails and presentations to complete by certain dates.

This is Spring 08's winning team. They had to pick up a cylinder, and move it down to a spot then return.

Do you get any bonus points if you can make it shoot out fire?



Also even if you dont get any bonus points, can you make it shoot out fire?

Pretty cool man. Looks like fun hard work but fun.
 
yea I suggested a large saw blade up front, like a circular saw. That we could just run over all the objects instead of threading them, lol.

Those are the most fun types of classes. I had something similar in during my engineering degree. Our projects were sponsored by local companies. My team had to make a robotic feeding device that could feed someone with only the ability to press a single button.

Nowadays, I make robots as my hobby. I use a robot kit that high school students get to compete in the FIRST contest. Can't remember what it stands for, but its a foundation to encourage kids to get interested in science and engineering, found by Dean Kamen, who invented the Segue. I've made numers derivations of radio controlled cars, and now that I got the programming kit, I'm working on things that can sort of walk. Here's my latest attempt.
