interesting stator coil/generator issue

ok, so if some of you read my other post, issues with peeling the fuel tank back, this is the the continuing story of why i needed to get under the tank. Several weeks ago, I was involved in an accident and the crank cover took the bulk of the damage.

So from the accident, I walked away with a hole punched in my cover. Oil leaked everywhere and I was forced to fork out $170 to have my bike towed 4miles to my house.(i would've walked it but I tore my ACL) yuck. Several days ago, I received a new cover and yesterday I proceeded to replace it. However upon removing the cover, I discovered there was damage to my stator coil. It apparently jammed up against the rotor assembly which shaved down the protective coating on the coil. I looked up the price yesterday and it's a whopping $190.

this is the other side of the coil. you can see it didn't touch the rotor however there are signs of corrosion in the copper. it's moldy green.

The coil bolts into the back side of the cover which allows the rotor to spin around it. The manual calls for loctite on these screws. I couldn't find any information as to which loctite so called up the dealership and the tech said to use Blue.

Things to know from this:
Loctite blue for the stator coil bolts.
Stator coil wire connection is just under the fuel tank.
The screws to the stator coil(see red arrows) is a T-30 Allen Star bit
The screws to the cover is a size 5 Allen bit


Also, the manual calls for 10Nm (7.2 ft-lb) for the stator coil bolts and 12Nm (8.7 ft-lb) for the cover bolts. The only torque wrench i can find that goes that low is the Craftsmen torque wrench 5-80 ft-lb. And it's on sale at Sears right now for 89.99.

well, i got a new stator coil from Yamaha and it seems what I thought was corrosion was actually normal. The green color was on the new one as well. I didn't get a chance to take a photo before installing. Got a little too excited. haha. The bike runs once more.

Also the service manual says you need to use yamabond to seal the rubber grommet on the stator wires. I really didn't feel like spending another $18 but i had a tube of left over hondabond which used instead. I assume it'll work just as well since it's silicone based sealant that stands up to high heat just like the yamaha brand. I'll let you know in a couple weeks if any problems arise from using the hondabond.
 
Good writeup! Sorry about the wreck. I hope you get it back running soon.

Even though the green wasn't a problem, it's good that you replaced that old stator. It might have worked even with the damage, but it would have been a ticking time bomb, eventually failing you.

Oh, Yamabond, Hondabond and Permatex Grey are all the same stuff. You don't need to worry about putting Hondabond on a Yamaha.

Being a little nit-picky here, but you're not supposed to use the bottom 20% of a torque wrench. For example, the torque wrench you mentioned should not be used for anything in the 8-21 ft-lb range.

That's what "they" say, but I'm sure it's fine for your bike. It's a good thing any time another fizzer is put back into service.
