Ignition switch controlled live wire - help!

Hi,

I am in the process of wiring in a stebel air horn and a power supply for sat nav/mobile phone etc. I have most of the set up sorted as per Fred's video BUT I now need to locate an ignition switch contolled live feed to energise the relay supplying power to the main fuse block.

Can any of you who have done this mod advise me of the best/easiest to find wire?

Tail light wire might work.

get a test light

add one end to earth ie the chassis or -ve of battery

then start probing wires with the ign ON the light will go on, to confirm it is IGN on only
tunr the ign OFF
light turns off it is the one u want

For a trigger wire, you can tap into the front running lights (or tail running light) to run to the relay. For the full 12 volts, go directly to the battery.

I wired the Stebal horn on my 07 direct to the battery(thru a relay) and of course the trigger wire (for the Stebal) ties into the factory horn wires..

The horn draws alot of power, I'd keep it on a separate circuit (I wired per the Stebal horn harness kit).

Hi,

thanks for the advice, I used the blue feed to the rear lamp for the switched source - it all works a treat! Much to my pleasant surprise.

I'm late to this thread, since it looks like you have it squared away.

I used the brown wire with the blue stripe, which is tucked down inside the left hand frame. That wire splits off to four fuses, and then goes out to various accessories. One of those accessories is the Blue/Red wire that you tapped into.

So what you have will work just fine, and actually has an extra layer of protection since it's fused twice (main fuse, tail light fuse) versus my setup that is only fused once (main fuse).

Hi Fred,

thanks for you comments. I am not sure if I am actually squared away yet - I have just noticed the rear tail lamp is blown! I did not check it before I put it away in november for the winter so don't know whether or not me tapping into it has caused the proble. I hope not! Unfortunately I do not have a spare and the stores here are now shut so it will have to wait till the morning. The switched feed to the relay coil is ok and the tail lamp still has a feed so hopefully it is just a fluke and not related to my mod!

I bet it just blew. Light bulbs are pretty simple things, and the only way to make them blow is to either shake them, smash them, or apply too much voltage. There's no way you could have applied more voltage than what the battery is putting out, so my guess is that it was just old.

Makes sense, you know what it is like you make a mod and something happens and your are not sure you did not screw up somehow! I would not describe electrics as being my strong point!

Hi Fred,

you were right, I have replaced the dead tail lamp bulb with a new one and everything is working as it ought to - quite a relief! Is the stebel loud or what!
