How do you hold the throttle/brake?

I got dinged in MSF for not using my all four fingers on the break, they referred to my index and middle finger on the break grip as a "motocross grip" and said that it wasn't safe for the street.

I go with the index & middle finger for the break but I only go the cover it route when there is a lot of traffic or other "exciting" environmental things going on.

I find it interesting that several different posts have mentioned different methods attributed to MSF. Instructor preference?

Im with the OP, Index and thumb wrapped around throttle, middle and ring on brake. Your index and thumb are made to work together. You can apply brake pressure and twist to rev match all at the same time. It was taught to me in one of my first golf lessons about the way we grip things . Try going through your day without using those two fingers together, it sucks. Example, putting glasses on, gripping a pen, gripping a steering wheel, etc We're just made to work that way. My .02 :)

I use index and middle finger for braking...I tried this middle and ring finger deal here at the desk and I can't put my ring finger up where the lever would be and have my pinky on the throttle, they just won't go that way. Maybe I have weird finger ligaments or something:confused:

I actually got bitched at by the instructors at my BRC for covering the brake. I still do with my index and middle finger however...don't tell anyone.

Just to expand on my inital response... the reason I dont rest any fingers on the brake is because then I tend to use only those fingers for braking if I do that... that is fine during easy braking but during hard braking I feel like I have less contact with the bike using only a few fingers and my winter gloves dont allow for full braking if in between the grip and the brake.
