Hi all, was hopeing to get some help re getting keys for my 2004 FZ6. When I purchased the bike I was only given one key and due to my ignorance and being only new to purchasing bikes didn't realize I should have been given a "RED master key" for the bike as well.

I recently went to get a spare key coded for my bike as it made me nervous only having one and was told that it couldn't be done without a "RED master key"? Is this true??

If this is the case and I loose the sole key I have, I was told that I would have to buy a new immobilisor and EPU costing around $1500(AU). Basically what this all means is my key is worth $1500!!

This whole set up seems ridiculous and is a real floor in Yamaha bikes if it is the case.

Has anyone got any other info or suggestions??

Hey Coastie, welcome to the forum mate. Another Aussie... Sweet.

As for your key drama, unfortunately, I think the info you've been given is true. The dealer told me the same thing when I bought my bike (new), "Don't lose the Red key, or it'll cost you heaps to replace the whole ignition system".

Any way of contacting the previous owner and finding out where the Red key is/went???

this came up recently with someone from the uk. thankfully we don't have this issue in the states. in that thread someone suggested getting regular copies made and taping the coded key to the bottom of the tank or something like that. but you would lose the "safety" feature that way.

good luck in contacting the previous owner. that seems to be your best bet.

silly question... would something like this show up for y'all on the aussie ebay? maybe with someone parting out a bike. it'd still be pricy but shouldn't run you $1500.00.
 
Hey thanks for the replies guys, glad to be on the forum!! Love my FZ6 just spewing about the keys!! I did track the previous owner down however I bought the bike 2 years ago now so chances of him having it is pretty slim.

I did get another key cut, so attaching the coded key to the bike somehow is the go hey?? Is the immobilisor a proximity thing??

Still can't believe the bike is so dependent on the "RED Key"!!
 
Well, yes without the red key you need the whole immobilizer unit and this costs almost 50% of a used FZ6. I think this is what Yamaha wants.
If someone steals a FZ6 and he has no key, he cannot make a new working key. Cause the immobilizer unit is so expensive, it is really not useful to steal a FZ6 without at least an original key. So nobody steals a FZ6. Theoretically.

I got the information that the red key is the _only_ possibility to learn new keys at several boards. Didn't heard of any who found another way.
In the manual is a hint the the red key is only for learning new keys and that you should not use it to drive the FZ6.

Anyway I would ask the previous owner. I think most people would _not_ throw such key away. Maybe he has found it and has the key lying around anywhere and he simply sends you the key.

Hey thanks Ozfazer6! I did take a key to a local key cutter, he tried to code it for me without success. I will look up a local Mister Minit though, he might have better equipment for doing it... hopefully!!
 
:welcome: to the forum Coastie great to see another Aussie round here :thumbup: , as you have read already this is true as i to have been told to NEVER LOSE YOUR RED KEY :D , not that you did but yes it is expensive , as Mick pionted out Mr Minute are the ones to go to for this job , they helped a friend of mine with his R1 key but i think then he said it was hit & miss with the code :(

Hey all, tried the Mister Minit suggestion with no success:( Looks like my only option is to attach the original to the bike somehow.

Does anyone know if this works?? Does the chip work by proximity??
 
This whole coded key thing is news to me. Yes I have a red key, locked in my safe, but I wasn't aware of the regular keys having any magical powers.

I put the key in the slot, turn it and off we go.

So I looked in the owner's manual and read the following:

This vehicle is equipped with an immobiliser system to help prevent theft by re-registering codes in the standard keys. This system consists of the following:
  • a code re-registering key (with a red bow)
  • two standard keys (with a black bow) that can be re-registered with new codes
  • a transponder (which is installed in the code re-registering key)
  • an immobiliser unit
  • the ECU
  • an immobiliser system indicator light

The key with the red bow is used to register codes in each standard key. Since re-registering is a difficult process, take the vehicle along with all three keys to a Yamaha dealer to have them re-registered. Do not use the key with the red bow for driving. It should only be used for re-registering the standard keys. Always use a standard key for driving

CAUTION:
DO NOT LOSE THE CODE RE-REGISTERING KEY! CONTACT YOUR DEALER IMMEDIATELY IF IT IS LOST! If the code re-registering key is lost, registering new codes in the standard keys is impossible. The standard keys can still be used to start the vehicle, however if code re-registering is required (ie if a new standard key is made or all keys are lost) the entire immobiliser system must be replaced. Therefore it is highly recommended to use either standard key and keep the code re-registering key in a safe place.
  • Do not submerge any key in water
  • Do not expose any key to excessively high temperatures
  • Do not place any key close to magnets (this includes, but not limited to, products such as speakers etc.)
  • Do not place heavy items on the key
  • Do not grind any key or alter its shape
  • Do not disassemble the plastic part of any key
  • Do not put two keys of the same immobiliser system on the same key ring
  • Keep the standard keys as well as keys of other immobiliser systems away from this vehicle's code re-registering key
  • Keep other immobiliser system keys away from the main switch as they may cause signal interference.
