The FZ definitely has much better wind protection, since your doing a lot of highway miles, but then again the ninja 650r will do a good job of cutting the wind too. The ER is a fun bike, but I would go with the FZ6 if I was going to rack up a good amount of miles, less maintenance cost in the long run.
If you can swing that outa state test ride, that would tell you alot!! Btw, don't forget about the Gladius, Fz6r, 599 (cb600f) or the SV650's that are still hanging around the show rooms.

Good luck & Happy Shopping!!!

two and a half years ago before purchasing my naked FZ6 I rode the er6n from one of my girlfriend's cousins, at that moment I really loved the bike, actually I was going to buy one but it was not available by the time, waiting of 3 months and only blue color available (the color available in the states) so I said no way.

So I went to see the FZ6 and I immediately felt in love with it after sitting on one and carefully looking the details.

Fortunately for me my sister's husband was working (still does) at the local Yamaha assembler and importer company so he bought it for me getting an employee discount, actually it was a double discount because it was a 2008 model bought in December 2008 when the 09 models had have already arrived to the country.

Since locally Yamaha has been generally more expensive than the Kawis I ended paying more money for my FZ6 than I had planned for the er6n, but it was totally worth.

Recently I exchanged bikes with the very same er-6n guy and guess what ... I felt the kawi with good low and mid range, but nothing top end, I felt it small, didn't like the sensation, and he wants now a FZ6 (but semi faired version) :D:D

Reliability? Here's a little story about a reason I went with the FZ6 and Yamaha....again. I had a 97 YZ250 dirtbike, while riding at a local track I had not noticed a hose clamp from the radiator (forgot to tighten) was loose. I lost the majority of the coolant but the bike kept running HARD! Not til I felt the engine lag did I notice the clamp. I added coolant and tightened the clamp....game on! Bullet proof!
